After months of lurking on /p/ I finally gave in and bought a GR.
I'm new to cameras, only ever having used a friend's Canon 550d and my own iPhone and getting an interest in photography through that.

Before I go out and shoot, is there anything you would recommend doing beforehand?
All I know is that I should be shooting in RAW and that VSCO is the way forward for edits.

Tips much appreciated.

I recommend you turn the camera on before you go out to shoot or else it won't actually take pictures. Just go out and take photos and have fun.

And don't start using vsco already god damn, it's a dumb gimmick and you should be focused on learning how to take good photos and how to use a camera and the editing software available to you rather than relying on dumb gimmicks.

If used correctly, it can lead to great results. When I say correctly, I mean with thought and consistency.

Congrats on the GR! I'm not entirely sure it's the best platform to learn photography, but if you keep the user manual handy and know how to google things, you will have fun. I've been eyeing the GR for a while myself. I'm kinda jealous :)

Using VSCO if fine, but do not use it exclusively - you gotta learn to post-process manually. Lightroom is all you need, just look up some tutorials on the web and youtube, it's not difficult.

There's been a huge increase in the amount of forest fires in my local area. it's been all over the news for weeks now.
Thinking of getting some shots of it while i've got the opportunity .

no problem, and the display mode I use for the MY1 is just the level and rule-of-thirds gridline, with all the other info off. You can customize what exactly is on what screen (up to 3 modes + screen off) in the GR's menu.

The base of the lens is already way bigger than on the old GRD cameras, and the film GRs were never faster than f/2.8 either so I don't know why everyone expects the next model to have a faster lens and I wouldn't get my hopes up.

if you expose & compose properly why do you have to vsco filter something to hide your photography errors? the GR has dreamy colors without having to add any filters. check out the flickr stream. also it seems most people use their GR for b&w.

Because the current GR is nowhere near obsolete, and is still selling very well, and that new camera from PENTAX-Ricoh Imaging, that every1 thought to be a new GR, ended up being a PENTAX medium format iirc.

I'd wait at least another year if I were them, to make it something real innovative, instead of just slapping 24 megapickels on it, adding phase AF and calling it a day.
They used to release new GR every 2 years because all the other digital GR's a shit and they replaced them quickly - but this time they've struck gold, so they don't rush it as much.

Basically amazing image quality, very portable, tailored for street photography, very dependable and doesn't break the bank. Also dem ergonomics. Just look anywhere on the net, basically everyone praises it (rightfully so).

You've probably got the latest firmware but check anyway.

Customise your thumb dial/button menu.

Get familiar where the crop mode is in the menus (or assign it to thumb dial).

Also locate the option to turn the auto focus light on/off.

Turn the 'is the camera on' light off.

Learn the way to adjust focus points

Go out and buy another battery

I know the 28mm is great for all encompassing shots of scenery like streets and maybe even landscape, but how do you handle more intimate shots on the street?

I know you can't get a 28 to act like a 50, but that distortion with peoples faces I don't think I like very much.

Have you actually looked at portraits taken with a 28mm? Show me some you don't like because there are a lot of good 28mm portraits. Yes there is distortion but there is also distortions with an 85mm and that a popular portrait focal length. I like both but the 28mm has more uses. It's a fantastic focal length on full frame.

I don't think there is much barrel distortion to begin with.
But even then it's a one click fix in Lightroom.

The reason people like longer lenses for portraits is becasue of perspective, not lens distortion.
It's all about the distance to the subject.

Cropping is a perfectly fine way to stand a little further so you get nice flat features.
Only disadvantages are:
- You'll see more noise in the magnified image, so you have to keep the ISO low.
- You get more depth of field, so no bokeh whoring.

in all the reviews i read on this camera, everyone mentions the IQ and sharpness of the images produced. But when i look at flickr groups to see sample shots it seems like 99% of them are grainy black and white shots or have god awful "lomo-esque"style colour rendering. Im I just not getting it, or are people doing weird post processing? i was genuinely interested in copping this camera, as my d700 + lenses is pretty cumbersome to lug around. But looking at user shots, i find myself somewhat hesitant. Is this thing capable of making clean, crisp shots?

The camera lends itself well to grainy black and white MUH STREET sort of stuff so there's a lot of that online, but it's also very capable of really excellent image quality if you're in good light at base ISO and stopped down a bit. The colors don't have to be wonky either, they're like that SOOC because I think the color palette makes really good B&W conversions, but you can get normal color in lightroom too.

I don't know if I stripped the exif on accident so this is f/5.6 at ISO 100 and there's plenty of sharp detail and I don't think the colors look bad at all.

that shot has really high grain (exif says only iso 800!) and basicly looks like it was taken by a 30 year old analog compact.

That was Amsterdam but I'm American. This is what the GR looks like at ISO 3200 when you're not intentionally processing the photo to look like shit and adding grain in silver efex to fake muh film look like the guy in the photo you linked.

Brenizer? no, not at all. For the brenizer method, you need a long lens with a fast aperture. You can absolutely create panoramas, but for the fake "large format" look, you need a much longer focal length than the GR provides.

Because a b&w sensor adds virtually nothing to IQ. You're better off shooting raw and converting to b&w in post. Or shoot in-camera jpegs, so you can enjoy unrecoverable colors.

Well, with BW only you wouldn't need a bayer array or AA filtering. Image would be sharper yet you'd have no issues with moire.

Think Sigma Foveon, except BW only and without the high iso issues.

You should be able to answer the question yourself. What is it that you want the picture to say? Is it clear enough? Do you find pleasure (even unexplainable) when looking at it?

What I'll say is that the eye "path" is not very comfortable, and the subject isn't clear enough to even be called one. You're not taking advantage of the potential sharpness of your GR by shooting at f2.8. But I'm just another /p/leb.

Yea that's what I was thinking, same arguments as the foveon (catch more photons) and it'd be kinda cool IMO.
A while ago I tried to debayer two old compacts by scratching off the bayer filter, ended up ruining them tho lol and it was kinda pointless anyway since they didn't shoot raw. But I'm gonna try that again some day with a cheap old cam.
I do have a sigma cam tho and it's great for bw.

Before your first shoot, take out your lense and prime your sensor on a bright uv. most people do this by aiming your camera on the sun on a bright day.

Do so for at least 30 minutes. Then enjoy your new gr!

I keep mine wrapped in an lcd cleaning cloth and just noticed dust between the lcd screen and its stock protective layer. No biggie and relieved because I thought they were dead pixels.

Also noticed some dust on the lens. Do I just blow them out with a manual blower?

(Had mine since release and aside from keeping it covered, dont treat it like a princess).

So my GR got dust on sensor last week, sent an email to Ricoh EU asking how much would it cost to clean and remove the dust, they want to charge 125€ + shipping and the waiting period is around 45 days, I feel like they are robbing me... and the camera is still on warranty. really disappointed with Ricoh, I love the camera and like to support not very mainstream brands but when you get treated like this makes you think how much safe you are if you choose Nikon or Canon

They are.

Normal price for sensor cleaning is €25 - €30
I would say labor for disassembling and reassembling shouldn't be more than €20. - it's not like they originally spend hours assembling it in the factory.
The waiting time suggests they send it to a low wage part of the world, where all this should cost way less.

I would just clean it myself.
Just a shame about the warranty, which will probably become void.

If so why not consider a hot shoe mounted optical viewfinder? That'll give you the 3-point contact and centre of balance that you'd get with a DSLR.

Other than "I would never use it" why is it stupid? Removing the color array allows for more detail, higher resolution, better light gathering, etc. All you lose is channel specific toning abilities for processing, but that's a pretty fair trade off. If all you shoot is B&W, what's the issue?

A GRD I is a good start as the CCD's used for the 'old' GR line are great. Lots of dynamic range and great post-processing potential are awaiting you. Plus, the GR's lens has always been sharp as fuck. You're gonna love it. I have a GRD IV myself and I couldn't be happier with it.

So... this or the Lumix LX7? I like street but also plan on doing some night-sky shots, and the LX7 has a Leica 24-90mm 1.4 lens. It's also $200 cheaper.

i use it for video it looks smooth and the colours are great. but then my video is just basic stuff but i think the picture is sharp and clear. no mic input though if that is an issue.
