Is it worth it to travel with a camera?

I'm going to Europe for a few weeks and I'm wondering if I should bother taking a camera. Do you feel like it's worth the hassle of carrying around a bag just for the pictures, and having to stop and get all set up? I'll only have about 4 or 5 days of actual free time, so I don't even know what I'll be doing or what's even worth taking a picture of.

It just depends. I always carry a bag with me anyway, and I'm strong enough (as should you be) to throw in a DSLR camera and a couple lenses in there.

If you really like phoyography, and especially if you're traveling, there should absolutely be plenty of things to take photos of.

It makes sure nothing breaks on the way.
DON'T throw it in a suitcase, they get handled rather roughly and you don't want that to happen with your gear.
Pack it in your hand luggage that you bring into the cabin and make sure it's not going to get harmed.

That's the thing though is that you always have your camera phone on you. So if you're not going into a situation looking to take pictures, and might just take a couple snap shots for the sake of it, isn't that good enough?

A DSLR/Mirrorless will yield better results than a phone and gives you a lot more options.
Especialy during night you can do a lot more with a real camera (and maybe a tripod).
Best combo for travel is a zoom lens that covers wide angle to telephoto, a fast prime, a tripod and some spare batteries.
So usualy your kit-lens and some f/1.x nifty fifty.
Maybe throw in a ND-filter and circular polarizer as well.

I would absolutely bring a camera and I'm not even at the level of a hobbyist. I just like taking nice photos of my family and landscapes. I'd get one with bluetooth though so I could edit in Polarr on my phone and share with the family on WhatsApp.

I usually take my Df and a 35mm prime and sometimes I'll slip an 85 in my pocket. I go out knowing what kind of pictures I want to take and dress appropriately, I'm not going to bring my 150-600 if I'm doing landscape, actually I do if there's the chance for wildlife on the way but you get the point.

Bag 1.
Gripped DSLR, three lenses, point and shoot, external HD, a bunch of fucking wires and cables etc, mints. I also throw keys, coins and phone in for security check. Fits under the seat in front

Bag 2.
Clothes, laptop, a book. Fits in the overhead bin.

But if you need suits, shirts and stuff for office wear bag 2 might not work out so easily but you can still check it.

that's when a pants pocketable camera becomes really useful, for light travel or edc. even with a pocketable mini tripod if you also need one. unless you're satisfied with the IQ and controls of your phone. for 4-5 days, that's already alot of free time to shoot. I'd still bring the lightest, capable dedicated camera with me. 1 camera with 1 lens only.

I really didn't think it was a very confusing question and I'm sorry for overestimating the posters of this board. Has anyone here had problems bring a camera in as a carry on? My camera just landed and it had the big warning sticker on the side of the package about it having lithium batteries.

Expensive or safety-critical shit (camera, scuba gear, laptop, gun optics, etc.) always goes in my carry-on. Sometimes they look in my bag (although usually not, which honestly surprises me more) but they've never kept me more than a few minutes. Chances are they've seen whatever weird shit you have before.

My scuba reg set looks like some kind of fusion bomb, but they recognized what it was pretty quickly.

The only time I had to explain what was up was when I had a bunch of Trijicon gunsights and gold/silver coins in the same Pelican case. Cameras are fine.

That's the thing though. I'm not a photographer. I'm just a guy who travels the world once or twice a year, which is the reason I started taking photos. Now I also take family pictures and street photography.

I just couldn't bring myself to carry heavy gear especially when hiking. I hesitated buying a Sony A7iii when I started, but then asked myself whether I could be bothered to take it, even on small walks in town. Simply telling myself this made me decide to go smaller.

Just find a good 16-35mm zoom and 24-70mm zoom, light weight is king

I just came back from a tour of Asia and used my phone for snapshits for my family/friends and carried my DSLR and 50mm lens in my daypack and if I was going out at night a carried a small tripod.
I just packed the camera and the lens safely into my backpack (Real Traveler™) and it was worth it for me.
The issue with your phone is that you (in my case) care less and just take quick snapshits.
In hindsight I would probably have squeezed my kit lens in to use the 18-55.

I was surprised the first time I held the Sony A7 III. It's very small.

Prime lenses are fine size wise too. But the zoom lenses are huge.

Zoom lenses are very useful for travel, as obviously it's not possible to zoom with your feet in many locations.

If you're only a prime shooter, I'd definitely go FF over MFT. Otherwise, MFT all the way for travel photography.

Something to the tune of "the one you have with you," because you get peeps who want the absolute pinnacle. in performance, but that's big and heavy so they don't bring it with them, this not taking any pictures, thus not making any progress in their skills. With a compact, no, your photos won't be of the utmost quality, but you will take photos and that's what counts the majority of the time when on vacation

I have the Panasonic G9, and sometimes I wish it was a tad smaller. It feels great in the hand though, and it's still relatively light with most MFT lenses.

I just put it in a shoulder bag with a prime and zoom and it still is comfortable carrying outside.

To OP, yes it's worth it.

I was on holiday in LA last year and forgot my camera at the hotel. I regretted it, because there's a limit to what a phone can do. It's just too wide.
