You definitely want to get the STM variant if that's a dilemma you're facing, it's optically superior along with the autofocus being considerably faster.
That said, the IS on my particular lens lets me get fairly steady shots on 1/200 shutter speeds. You really do feel it kick in when you half press the shutter.
Generally you'll be sitting at ISO 400, but 400 is still perfectly clear.
