It is for me. Travel photography is the only photography that I do. Local snapshots are just an exercise.

Travel is a hobby for some, and separately an entire industry, with various niches not just a method of transport.

I drive 6 gorillion km a week for work, 90%+ in the countryside.
I carry my camera and take different routes whenever I have time or can come up with a reason to go somewhere new, which isn't generally too hard.
Pretty scenic, so it's good.
Pic related, just pulled it off card a minute ago and was open in another window.

going outside and painting what you see.

you can get cheap acrylic paint, black white red blue and yellow, and just mix them until they are exactly what you see. start simple: simplify a landscape into three shapes and then try to get the colors of each shape exactly right. you will realize you don't know how to compare values and colors as well as you think you do.

Pretty much every hobby gives you something to take photos of. I dance - i take photos of my dancer friends. I love cars so i take photos of them etc. So i guess the benefit of hobbies is easy subjects. As for IMPROVING your photography... just practice and try new things with your camera all the time.
