had pretty good results from a konica mini neo. was seriously small and i felt the images were as sharp as u'd want them. looked a bit nicer than the olympus mu and very cheap. u could get a few of them because these old point and shoots WILL fail no matter how much u baby them so having a few backups is nice imo.

Bought a Yashica FX-3 with a Tamron 28mm F2.8, Yashica 55mm F2, Tamron 70-150 F3.5 for 6 euros 3 years back. Finally had some rolls delivered because I couldn't be arsed during covid. Aside from some minor light leaks on some images and some grit on some images it seems to work fine. Shutter also seems less than 10% off. I'll make some scans from the prints later.

Doesn't matter.

I started this film shit because the gear was cheap and so was film and development. Could get good quality stuff and pay only for what I shot instead of the big outlay of a DSLR. That's no longer the case.

Probably moving to EOS-R in the new year. Can use all my EF and FD stuff with it.

Still have a GW690 for the interesting days where you need big resolution

No. But I've enough EF gear to make the jump a natural one. And enough FD gear to make an EOS DSLR a less-good idea.

It's either that or an RP. Anything else would be way beyond my means.

Pic not related. I wanted to see what'd happen if I tried to photograph a lighthouse 8.5km away using a 300mm FD telephoto with a 2x teleconverter.

I'm a filmfag and all but come on. Most films will not outresolve that standard digital sensor resolution and ones that do (T-MAX 100, weird slow microfilms, maybe Kodak 50D) you either don't scan at full IQ or you pano and stitch which is a pain.

Not about resolution. Digital will have blocky areas the film just wont at any magnification. Film just becomes softer, while digi files crumble into blocky messes. I would absolutely use a 30 mpx scan over a 30 mpx digi file if I was printing.

Does the back focal distance of the camera system affect exposure? I.e. does a longer distance between the lens and film cause a darker exposure? Thinking of buying a TLR or some other ancient lens in a box contraption and wondering if I can just use a 35mm camera as the meter, or if I'll have to compensate.

Sorry /pee/, I can't do it, I'm too fucking stupid. I plan on getting either of these lenses : Industar-61, Industar-69, Jupiter-12, Jupiter-3 or Jupiter-8.

From what I understand, I need an M39 adapter but they seem MUCH rarer than the L39 ones. I heard the difference is very small, is it enough to make a difference ?

For a dichotomic question, do I need an M39 or an LTM/L39 adapter ?

L39 and M39 are the same, but people claim there's a difference in shimming. None of these lenses is fast enough to notice a difference, so get whatever adapter is cheaper. Note the Industar-69 was made for half frame and does not focus to infinity if not modified.

Ok I'm going to save you some grief.
If you want to put an m39 SLR lens on an m42 SLR body you will need one of the rarer eastern bloc slr m39-m42 rings. I got bullshitted that
1. a ltm-m42 adapter would work (doesnt, shitty ones wont fit, nicer ones wont focus to infinity or otherwise)
2. The new production adapters work (they dont they dont have the same thread pitch and you will need camera surgery to remove them)

If you want to use an m39 slr lens on an m42 slr body you need one of the old adapters. Trust me I've owned several of the new production kind (all dont thread despite claims otherwise) and the nicely made old japanese LTM-m42 adapter does thread properly but sits too far out on the body to focus.
I have a soviet m39 to m42 slr ring that looks like shit and is from many moons ago and that works perfectly and focuses to infinity.

Effective piece of kit, even if the 100-300 has a bit of slack in the servo and screams like a salted child going feet first through a grinder when it's running.

Screens are interchangeable - you can find them on eBay if you look.

The AF sensor is in the base of the mirrorbox under the mirror (I think). It does nothing to the AF beyond making it easier to override it manually when the AF can't see a good vertical line of contrast.

8mm Film is also reasonably sharp.

Disc film required a dedicated enlarging system to gives its best results which few labs and developers actually had.

F and M42 are the most common though.

But very large distance from lens to sensor, when focusing very close (macro to extreme macro ranges) does. Most cameras that allow that kind of focusing (like the RB/RZ67), have a diagram as you focus closer that gives you the exposure compensation you need to apply at each distance.

Also see how the transition area (mountain) is a very simple shape, so it's easy to make a good mask with little effort.
Also given the very high contrast, you can burn in the midtones/shadows (sky, after red filter) very effectively with a 5 contrast filter, without messing the highlights.

So, depending how dark he managed to get the sky with the red filter (maybe polariser too), he might not even have had to mask and burn, maybe a split contrast and burning in anything short of midtones into pure black might have sufficed.

But the easiest and non-retarded way to do it in this specific case, in during printing. I mean, get close with the red filter and all, and finish it off in printing. It would be almost impossible to get absolutely crashed black with zero detail and grain across the whole sky purely in-camera.

Tap water isn't room temperature unless you let it sit for hours. I had a couple rolls where I wasn't getting full speed because of that. If it feels colder than the air, it is. That goes for dev, rinse and fix.

It is (more or less) where I live. At least when not in the dead of winter. I thought that was pretty common.
I do wonder how people manage to get reticulation from just normal dev practices. Isn't modern film designed to be resistant to it? You'd have to be using some weird expired or rescued film for like <10°C gradients to mess it up that badly.

I wouldn't put too much effort into it --- most exist in the Canon range in some form. Adapting is either when you've no other alternative - or you blunder into a bargain that's worth running with. For the most part, unless you really want a new lens, you're better off going native.

There is no way in fuck that the temperature of the tap water here is so far away from room temperature that within the 15 minute period that the developer spends in the tank its temperature drifts enough that the new tap water which goes into the stop bath shocks it into reticulation.

The water changes temp when it comes through the pipes in your house and anyway, when you're developing B&W you're using what, 68F water? My room is not going to be more than 80F generally, more likely 70 to 74, I don't see how a drop of a few degrees will do something to it.

I measure the temp of my cold tap water when developing. It was 68F. I also do a pre-soak anyway.

You'll probably get an acceptable image out of it.

You might get funky behaviour if it's colour film that's been badly stored. B+W I doubt you'll notice and I regularly shoot 15 year out of date slide film and get decent images. I'll resize some scans and post below.

Some use film formats you can't get anymore, proprietary kodak spools or odd sizes. They usually shoot at a fixed speed and aperture, probably f/8 1/60. The red window on the back means you can't easily shoot color.

Should be fine but make sure the shutter works and stick to slower film. They were designed for 50-100ASA, fomapan 100 or 400 is your cheapest option and has a pretty wide latitude. You're going to need it.

No straight DSLR scan of negative as is. I only adjusted black and white level to compensate for the wider dynamic range of the DSLR, it was about 10-15min post sunset and the colours there were quite surreal (mixing blues into the orange/red post sunset glow).

Other shots off the roll shot during normal light were normal looking.

Push/pull your film so the brightest the day will reasonably get is 2 stops overexposed and soup in rodinal to lower the contrast. Average light will show up average, darker is going to be darker. You should potentially be able to save most of the highlights and still shoot down to a heavy overcast or extremely overlit interior. Check your actual shutter and aperture and adjust to what speed you need accordingly, it's an expensive version of the streetfag spray and pray.

What's weird is like a third of the examples I've seen don't have an external lens like mine does while the rest do and that's what has me confused.
Nothing stopping me from using a roll but I'd hate to get it developed and not have anything useful, I guess it would prove that for the examples like mine that the lens has fallen off or gone missing at one point in the last century

The X-700 is equivalent to the OM-2SP pretty much.

Price out the whole systems and according to what you can find in your area/online and what you need, and then you decide.
*I* prefer the Olympus (OM-2SP) , because on top of the Minolta it has
• spot meter
• mechanical backup speed at 1/60
• smaller lenses, flashes, accessories, smaller camera body too, denser and more metal based build
• bigger viewfinder (more coverage *and* more magnification)
• ISO 12-3200 (instead of 25-1600) paired with *very* sensitive off-the-film metering that can do long exposures in very little light

But it doesn't matter, all those are mere inconsequential conveniences and preferences.
Take the one that you can find easiest and cheapest, including lenses and accessories.

In the later production of the No 1 they stopped putting the lens on the front due to flaring issues, at the same time they seemed to opt for the simplified number settings for the aperture rather than f stops.
None of the manuals found online represent these later production examples and no one except some guy on YouTube knows about the change

Got 2 rolls exposed, would've been more If I brought more

Kinda excited to see how the night photos came out if they came out at all. Given the conditions a light meter app on my phone told me anywhere from 1/4 to 1/8 of a second shutter at f/3.5 which is what I did

I got interested in Tessars again, because I like the one on my Rolleiflex and I wanted a nice one for 35mm. So I started looking up all the Zelss Jena and Industar Tessar-formula lenses... and then found out that the Konica Macro-Hexanon that I already have (and have barely used) is a Tessar. Neat. Are you going to keep both lenses? I sold my 35mm in favor of the 28mm elmarit and just kept the 50mm Cron. Always feels like 35mm is either too wide or not wide enough.

I know, it's basically the same as Zeiss and Voigtländer. What I wanted to point to is that the 7A stuff can produce good results and I heard qc at TT is better. Uncle Ken also likes the 50/1.4. If I was on a budget and looking for another 50mm, I'd give it a try.

Or I could just spend some time taking test shots of the focus calibration chart with my 7a lenses (got the 50/1.1, 35/2, and 28/1.4 from a few years back), and not blow 400€ on a lens that's redundant for me in principle. Maybe proper calibration (eventually, after four or five rolls' loose snapshit frames) will give me confidence in those lenses; so far the distance scale doesn't agree with known-good lenses on my M7 so I'm a bit... perturbed shall we say.

If you already got the 7A 50/1.1, the only advantage of the TT 50/0.95 is clicky aperture. I calibrated mine on a digital camera and it's ok. What bothers me about it is its weight. Apart from that it's a nice lens even without aperture clicks.

TTA's an aspherical 2/3rds of a stop faster Eye of Sauron lens, where 7a is a "lol, make it bigger" Sonnar; difference being the Sonnar will make fatter lines for an "inky" look, whereas ASPH designs look aggressively clinical. Do you mean that any difference would only show up on combinations of film, technique, and development that would render it irrelevant when shot handheld at 1/60s on Fomapan 200 souped in HC-110(B), of your sister's fast-moving family on christmas eve?

Also TTA has a massive 67mm filter ring. It'd be no filters for me; biggest I've got are 58mm, and a 9mm step down is vignette city.

It's not grey like all the black and white film I've handled so far, it's white!

Shot 6 bracketed shots from ISO 6 to ISO 200, gonna develop it in Rodinal 1+100 stand, is that a good idea?

Here's another one with the ASPH Elmarit (wide open).
If you really want a great lens, get the Summilux ASPH. A friend got the 35mm loaned for a project and holy shit it looks so good even on the M10.

There is an asph-typical sharpness in the pidgeon photo all over the near field. Look at the paving to the right of the front bird's breast. The difference that ASPH makes shows up in 400 ISO cubic grain film already, as long as it's not being developed in Caffenol so that actual contrast has a chance of showing up.

I was barely able to afford a M7 when one fell in my lap for a relative song (should've bought the same guy's M6 too, but oh well). It's definitely the case that I cannot afford any kind of Leitz-branded lens or even a third-party TTL flash.

To be honest, I never checked on asph-sharpness. I got the lens cause it's compact.
Regarding the TT 50/1.4: I'd get a used one and try it.. bet you don't lose much when buying used and it's certainly worth a try.

It will work, Kievs can withstand a nuclear blast or two, but I'd run a test roll to check for any spacing issues. It's a relatively common issue, because old lubricant turns into gum after 40 or so years and messes the spacing up
Otherwise-have fun. Arsenal's lenses are fucking awesome, you now don't need to go to the gym and when loading the film you should wind it until arrow on the backing paper aligns with the red dot

ISO 200 is absolutely an overkill. I doubt that a microfilming film had sensitivity higher than iso 12 when it rolled out of factory. Oh, and it may be insensitive to red light.

So I see a lot of channels and sites recommending to get expensive modern light meters, but is it worth it to instead get an old analogue light meter as a budget option and how does it compare to just using a phone app?

As always, it depends. Some of old analogue meters have selenium cells that tend to deteriorate with time so the measurements can be way off. I got by for a long time using phone/digital camera meters ant it was fine, absolutely fine, however I got myself a professional digital light meter (minolata auto meter IV) and ever since I never want to go back. It's accurate and fast to use, smaller than digital camera and allows for an almost instant metering instead of launching an app, clicking tis and clicking that. Few months ago I upgraded it to version VI with integrated spot meter and now it's a dream, it allows to automatically expose for highlights/shadows, average exposure from many points and even has memory for your film exposure latitude.

So my opinion is as follows: if you will use it and can afford go get one (tere are ones on ebay for 65-85 USD). If you are tight on a budget your phone app will do just fine.

Could anyone suggest me a 35mm Nikon film camera? I would prefer something fully mechanical (works without batteries) and relatively small in size, but I'm open to anything. I don't need anything to do with exposure/metering or autofocus. I've seen people suggest the F3 and F-801 but I've got other film cameras the same size and weight so I'm just trying to see if I can get something a little different. Thanks

Yes, it's the thing. Stand dev drastically lowers the contrast. But expired film is already lower contrast due to age and fog, so when developing it you want to increase contrast, not decrease

I use an old Luna Pro F. Ambient, spot, and flash metering work and the computer dials (that's what they call them) make using filters and nailing complex exposures really simple. If you never use flash, you couls get away with one of the little sekonic ones that don't even have a battery.
