My local medieval fair is having a photo competition.

They require:
1) Action photo
2) Night photo
3) Portrait

Thought it would be a good opportunity to practice my skills and it wouldn't be too weird if I'm shooting all the time since there is a competition.
What would be the best lens to take for all 3?
Any tips?

any kit lens that has a decent long focal length at the long end, at least 100mm equivalent I'd say, it doesn't need to be super high end
make sure you have a tripod for the night shot, don't worry about the aperture of your lens just use a tripod

Thought to make the night shot of the fire show, I wouldn't need a tripod in that case. Or is that too cliche?

The longest focal length I have i a 18-55 on a crop sensor, or 35 and 50mm both on crop

200mm f4 lens on a crop sensor will do you for the action and the portrait. The old manual ones are dirt fucking cheap.

I've tried to capture other categories but just couldn't find the right position to place myself in, everything was overcrowded so I wasn't happy, the light was crappy and some of the best shots I missed because I didn't have my camera out so I kind of gave up in frustration until I found a nice spot for the fire show.
This is a overcropped portrait I tried to salvage but in general it should have been closer so I am not really happy about it at all.

This actually still looks really good. Black and white was a good choice, but I suspect that it will be underappreciated. You only think it's overcropped because you saw the original, but it still looks crisp and derailed to fresh eyes.

that's really too bad, op. I hope this isn't too discouraging a moment for you. the portrait one is pretty good, very painting esque but the action shot i feel the dof kinda ruins it and the night shot is like the other anon said pretty generic.

Your night shot was better, but I can see how they would have gone with the other one, even if it is kind of a mess. The portrait is cool,but personally I like yours best. The action shot os pretty good though. I think the winners just captured the event better. Yours were much better pictures. Except debatably the portrait. I could see both sides with that one.
