Ideally, but it's a pretty wide lens, so it has more depth of field at wider apertures. Also, I'm sure at f16 you would get some diffraction.

Because the autofocus system is unreliable trash so you press a button and know that everything beyond X meters is in focus.
I only use AF for close range shots at f2.8 and use the snap option for anything else.

No not on a wide angle APSC lens. At f5.6 everything beyond 1.44meters will be in focus which means that if you can't kick it it'll be in focus.

It's okay. Never fell in love with it like I imagined I would. 28mm is phone tier and the sooc images are all a bit bland/cold looking even compared to my X-T100 which should have identical output.
However if you already have a Fuji and can deal with the downsides of this camera I would definitely go for it since it's nice to intuitively know the controls of the camera etc which you won't on the Ricoh.

40mm is based, my favorite focal length and my most used one (41mm) but it's just too tight for true all purpose everyday shooting.
I would argue that 35mm is the best for the walk around shooting. Which is why I would really love to have an X100V one day.

I had one for ~5 years. It's small, but not small enough to truly carry around comfortably in a pocket (I'm not a fatty). Then there's the always-28mm lens which is kind of a boring focal length to be always committed to. The hot shoe was nice - throw a wireless trigger on there and a use a hand-held flash for unique photos in a very small kit. The dust issues are annoying, so I was always nervous and making sure to put it away in a clean camera bag, which also took away from the portability.
They sure are good at marketing these things though. Got me real good.

It's not the size which makes it unpocketable but the weight. It's the same size as a pack of cigarettes but when I put one in the same pocket I normally carry a pack of cigarettes in I can't help but feel it's weight every step.

I'm sure that ither cameras could also provide me with many features I value in the Ricoh. Yet, of all similar cameras I was able to test, the Ricoh was the most comfy to use. It fits right in the palm of my hand, doesn't draw a lot of attention in its pouch on my backpack, it is incredibly fast and precise when set up right, I like the noise pattern very much and appreciate the results I get when working off the limits of what it usually is used for, ...
This camera makes me happy every time I use it and I use it a lot. I even get our of my way to go to places and events, just to be able to take some pictures, which I rarely did with larger cameras.

I carry it in a handlebar snack pouch when I ride my bike. It's like a cup holder, so I always have it ready to shoot. One day I also put my gloves in there and forgot to close the opening a little tighter. When I had to drive from the road on to a sidewalk, the border stone was a little steeper than excpected, I was a lot faster than I should have been. The camera jumped out of the pouch and fell onto concrete.
The crash broke its neck. The lens is permanently stuck outside and a little crooked. It only makes some dreadful noises when I turn it on and tries to move a little. I dislike that the software switches off the camera afterwards, I would love to see how the damage affects the images, maybe the broken lens creates a nice effect.

Where my phone doesn't match the quality of a p&s, it matches my trousers pockets without being too fragile.
Also, I've learned, where I can take a p&s, I'll take an interchangeable lens camera, too, which includes a DSLR and heavy zoom, if not a backack of zooms. The Canon 6D + 40/2.8 is my always in my backpack cam. The Sony A7III + Samyang 35/2.8 didn't replace it, it was too fragile, too, and oddly shaped to fit into a normal backpack. The major reason I'll go for a mirrorless next is elecronic shutter close to if not global shutter.

Huh, nope! Global shutter is already existing except for consumer cameras. The Nikon Z9, Sony A1 eshutters are competing with mechanical shutters and the Canon R3 e shutter is close a notch behind, still close to slower mechanical shutters.

carrying any camera larger than a phone is equally inconvenient until you reach giant fucking 8lb telescope territory. i have a cheap shit P&S, a small and light 35mm SLR that's about the size of a m4/3 setup, and a full frame DSLR, and find them all equally annoying to carry (disclaimer: i don't have any 10lb telescopes of lenses). the camera that is always with me is called an iphone 13. if i want more than its limited capabilities i just take the DSLR.

I don't have a Ricoh GR because I've had three and sold them all at some point, usually out of guilt from purchasing some other camera equipment. Inevitably I come back around to wanting one again. Currently in that phase. But I have a Ricoh GR 28mm LTM lens, so I'm rocking that for now and it does the job of making the rangefinder more pocketable, hyperfocal snap shooting, etc.

Got one for free. The lens cap is an oddity for a pocket camera. Vastly superior to a mobile phone, particularly for snapshots and for unplanned portraits. Not recommend for video, except as pre-focused B-roll.

If you can get one for half of what a GR costs, it's great value.

Why?

The point is having image data you can work with. Both in post produtction and in print. I'm aware that most people don't use the camera for prints and could use a lesser point and shoot or a phone for what they do, but I find it reassuring that I get professional results out of this tiny camera.

Sir, this is a photography forum. Of course people here would prefer to use a dedicated camera with a 'real' sensor over a phone even though their phones might suffice in 99% of circumstances.
Besides the difference in quality between my Pixel 4a and XF10 is huge once you start to crop just a tiny bit. On a phone you immediately can tell everything is mushy and filled in by AI. On the camera the detail is still there.

It's also perfectly fine at 5.6 and good enough at 2.8.

I have a Ricoh R1s and I was hoping that the GR III would just be a digital version of that for me. Sadly because of how expensive and heavier it is I am not as carefree with use as I am with my R1s.

Its an ok camera, I am really keeping it around for when the R1s dies and I drop casual film shooting because of the skyrocketing prices of it all.

The whole "street photo" thing is really cringe and when looking for any other sort of good examples of what else to use this camera for (settings, inspiration, tips) you have to dig through so many images of the back of peoples heads or b&w high contrast flying pigeons in some God forsaken USA/European city. Honestly I feel that street photography is really bottom of the barrel tier genre that doesn't create a lot of captivating images. So perhaps I am the fool for buying a point n shoot that is aimed at the demo.

XF10 is within the performance of the GR3 sensor for a much lower price, has built-in fill flash and isn't a sensor dust sucker. the AF speed needs improvement, but at least it has 2 snap modes for fast shots.

I've had my GRiiiX for a little while and still don't really get it. 40mm is my favourite focal length but I'm not sure I like composing on a screen instead of a VF... :(

It's a cope but also a useful tool. F5.6 is on a lot of modern digital cameras the best aperture for across the frame sharpness and due to the 28mm fov nearly everything you can't physically touch will be in focus at that point. I find it a useful feature on my XF10.

It's possible to get 17mm f1.4 for 100$ on apsc. Fit it to ten year old body and you get far better value than GR or any high end pnshoot. It's not pocketable, but with electronic viewfinder you can enjoy manual focusing, or go for zone focusing, either will be much more practical because of full manual design. Not to mention that it's several stops faster at f1.4, and even optically superior across all apertures.

Because my Canon S95 is just as useful, is smaller and takes as good of a photo as an all the time carry needs to take. Also my tiny S95 costs less than $100 to replace if damaged and that Ricoh behemoth costs $900.

If a camera isn't allowed to have manual controls as an option to be a point-and-shoot I don't see what the advantage is over a phone. Nor do I see any disadvantage of having the option to use manual controls, even if you never do.

None of the automatic-only cameras that I know of have large sensors, so you don't get that advantage either.

You are prancing around with a dicklet sensor with a fixed focal length that was meant to be used to call people and services, i stroll around with a not-as-dicklet sensor with a good zoom and meant as a tool to capture quick moments.
I capture moments and plan locations with a pocket camera, you take forced snaps with a cellphone that you don't even edit or post anywhere

And why would you ever need to stop down on a 24mm f5.6 equivalent dof lens? It has iso and shutter speed control, what manual features am I missing?
And I have phone pictures posted here, masquerading as "real" camera photos, and they've only ever been praised. Oh and I edit them in Snapseed, it's great.

I say this as the snobbiest of full frame users, as a 2nd camera a good smartphone is more than adequate. What you have is a toy, consumer junk, worthless and redundant. Prove me wrong, post a photo my phone couldn't.

All my gear has purpose, 35mm and mf film, FF Digi and my phone.

I could definitely cut down, 2 mf bodies, at least a dozen 135, my old crop DSLR from when I started out, FF mirrorless, last count was 60+ lenses, 5 hot shoe flash, 3 studio flash, 2 tripods. Heck I've got a box with about 8 Fuji xa in it too that I didn't include in the 135's. And I've sold a lot along the way too.

See, I have much more experience than you with gear. I can confidently say a wide angle fixed lens digital point and shoot is a giant waste of space in the modern smartphone era.

Because it's designed for street "photography", the dullest franchise in the history of photography.

Seriously, each shot following random people from some urban hellscape as they endure their suicide-inducing environment is indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the genre’s only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of black and white, all to make life unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when street "photographers" decided unauthorized candid snaps were the way to go; they made sure the genre would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody - just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for their books. Street "photography" might be anti-human (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-aesthetic genre in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The juxtaposition is dreadful; each street book is terrible. As I look at each one, I notice that every time a the opportunity appears the snappers take a picture of someone making it seem like their head is the one on a sign and showing their legs or vice-versa. Then, some picture of a puddle, an umbrella or a hobo. Art!

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that pattern was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. The street snapper's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that they have no other style of communicating. I once read a lavish, loving review of the genre by the same Elliott Erwitt. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are enjoying street photography at 21 or 22, then when they get older they will go on to enjoy Elliott Erwitt." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you consume street photography you are, in fact, trained to consume Elliott Erwitt.

I call this one "GO OUTSIDE". I took it with a leica M11 and framed it so /pol/ would just be visible as a reminder of its cancerous and intrusive nature. Focus drops off slightly away from /o/, /out/, and /p/ to symbolize how photographers often need to press alt+f4 to unlock 4chan's god mode and go actually take photos, an activity often involving a car and a location away from home.

IQ? Ricoh at least until the dust collects. But the difference isn't huge specially with the GX9. I'd get the GX9 since the IQ hit isn't as big as the features hit of the Ricoh.
