FF to M43 equivalence

No.4155058 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Help me understand this.
So if I have a FF with a 300mm F4, and a M43 with a 150mm F4, I am gathering the same intensity of light on a given spot on the sensor, right? So any one point is receiving an equivalent amount of light, and thus, the exposures are the same.
BUT...since the FF sensor is 4x the size of a M43 sensor, in total, I would be gathering 4x the light, and 4x the detail of the M43, right? If I print at a given size, say 40x60cm, that same space is being filled by 1/4th the light, if I choose to use M43?
Why would I choose M43? I don't care about weight, I am young and healthy and able to carry some lenses. Price isn't even all that different. The canon 300mm F4L and Oly 40-150mm F2.8 cost about the same. So the money savings aren't even that amazing, I get 1 stop of light more at an equivalent price, but the total light gathered is still less than on the FF.
