just cranking up the contrast would lose detail in light parts, right?

Use curves and shadow/highlight adjustments instead of the contrast slider
Push the ever loving fuck out of b&w film (3 stops or more) and expose for the highlights

literally just
1. pick subjects in hard contrast, under harsh light or bright areas
2. underexpose the living shit out of every image to the max, to the point where everything but highlights is obliterated
3. additionally lower exposure in post if you can without fucking up the image
4. lower the shit out of highlights whites shadows and blacks
5. play with maxing out highlights and whites until they start showing
6. use tools in photoshop or lightroom to further darken any other areas outside of the primary zone of highlights in the image or outside of the area of your subject

VOILA! CONGRATULATIONS! You are now an ''artist'' just like alanschaller! WOWZERS!

Been looking at his photos. Seems like he has a lot of interesting ones, but so many of them are out of focus and yet the avantgarde consuming overclass gobbles it up and he gets praise for them.
