To someone who wants a killer deal, the D850. They’re under $2k and likely the best DSLR that will ever exist.

To someone on a budget, maybe a D800, they’re super cheap for an incredible body. F mount lenses are so cheap too.

If you want the new hotness mirrorless, Z5 or Z6, just such a killer deal. If you’re a landscape shooter, original Z7.

Price is no object? Z8.

Film? F100, or a F3, FM or FM2.

So the situation of older lenses on Z is such that one might as well buy a non-Nikon mirrorless camera and adapt them to that, since sticking with Nikon doesn't handle them any better?
I can imagine someone at Nikon thinking, "brilliant plan! this will force them to buy new lenses!"

Yea it doesnt matter which manusl lenses you adapt to mirrorless, they're gonna perform the same.

If you want vintage lenses on a digital body with creature comforts such as metering, automatic aperture and aperture priority, stick to a native mount camera. Nikon and Pentax are pretty much the only ones that offer this.

You're fine with G glass. Fully compatible, no different than shooting on a DSLR.

The only F mount lenses I adapt to my Zs are a 50mm f/1.2 AI-S, so no AF anyways, much easier with magnification to nail focus. And a 135 f/2 DC, also benefits from the magnification. I never felt like I could fully trust the AF when DC was engaged, it tended to front focus on a D850.

I've been enjoying having an old FF dslr and dirt cheap AF lenses. It's been a great way to get in to both FF and Nikon with little investment. I don't see the juice being worth the squeeze for mirrorless FF Nikon for me. The net result is that it's a lot of investment for no/negligible improvement in image quality.

There really isn't much salt to nikon Z unless you get the FtZ 2 adapter and adapt your G lenses to it. I've been considering a Sony A6000 or newer and a 50mil to give mirrorless a try but for now my D3 and F4S works fine.

A6000 is serviceable. I fell in love with the small form factor and found a 6600 for stupid cheap on Zuckerbook Marketplace.

The AF is mind blowing. That's all. And I owned a D850 at one point.

I just prefer dslrs cause of the ovf and I'm cheap.
I'd move back to pentax cause their making new f8lm cameras but I hate the fact that I can't get a 85mm for cheap on their FA line

I use D8*0 bodies and I have anything from AI/AIs lenses to AF/AFD and E lenses: it really makes no sense to pay more for having nothing more.

I'll never understand the mirrorless craze. Especially by a battery life standpoint.

I didn’t expect to like my Z6 as much as I did. It blew me away. IBIS, more reliable autofocus in most situations, and the 24-70 kit lens’ sharpness sold me on the system. The battery life is fine, still getting 8-900 shots on a charge.

As for now I don't really need it but I got a load of other stuff I don't need as I'm an hoarder, so, one day I might get one and try it.

But all those things have existed since like 2007, and that gear can be had for peanuts today.

Price to raw performance may have gone down but development has stagnated to the point where 10 year old equipment still keeps up, so as a consumer why get something new when the old cheap stuff still does everything.

Does anyone have experience with both the z50 and the z5? I've enjoyed my z50 for almost a year, but I'm regretting not testing out the z5 first. Am I missing out on much in terms of AF and noise levels having gone with the z50? I've never used a FF camera.

Let me warn you, once you have this thought in your brain you will never rid yourself of it, no matter how many sample images you look at on dpreview to try to dissuade yourself. It will nag you until you go full frame. You will not be able to sleep at night.

I honestly find FF cameras barely sufficient and can’t believe nobody’s gotten good, fast hybrid PDAF working on at least DX medium format yet. Fuji is incompetent overall and everyone who buys hasselblad/p1 shoots mf.

Yeah but the tech is gradually catching up with their aspirational scope. 100MP readouts are slow and even line-skipping the AF is gonna struggle. The faster the chips get the better the AF will be. Going from Expeed 6 to 7 on my Nikons was a breath of fresh air. I'm sure it's a similar situation on Fuji's side of things, and they don't have to cheap out on their GF line as much as they do their APS-C line.

The processors on phones are ahead of cameras. Everything on phones is ahead of cameras. It's all being gimped due to legacy compatibility and power efficiency, otherwise we'd have internal SSDs and batteries that are twice as large (but that wouldn't sell battery grips now would it?)

They're similar tech aren't they? It's all ARM foundations. The chips on phones have to be general computing devices, and the camera chips are laser focused on image-making.

And regarding batteries, they're about the same. An iPhone 14 Pro has a 3200 Mah battery, and a Nikon EN-EL18d is 3300 Mah.

That new Hasselblad has an internal 1TB SSD. CFe cards are basically interchangeable SSDs.

My understanding of the ARM arms race is that they're always trying to go to smaller and smaller nodes to extract more power savings, squeeze more performance per watt out basically. And they're achieving that, incrementally.

Thats what CF already was, its literally a flash drive with an IDE port on it.
CF to IDE adapters are just a series of pins with zero electrical components in there.

Where is the coating? On the lens elements. It's greenish. You can check by pointing the lens at a point light source until it flares, look at the color of the flares, there's your lens coating. AI-S lenses were NIC, Nikon Integrated Coating.

What is the cheapest (current used prices) DSLR, regardless of full frame or crop, that has the non-gimped lens compatibility of post-AI lenses?

That means:

A mode and matrix meter with AI/AI-S
AF works with AF/AF-D
Supports AF-P

That last one knocks out the d200/300/300s and even d7000 from the running

Hi Nikkon users, curious question. When I kind of forced to buy a DSLR back in 2013 the general consensus was that you can go for an entry model either for Nikon or Canon. It was said that Canon was for both videos and photography while Nikon was much better for photography.

FE series, FM series does it.
The EM does it too, dunno about the FG series but probably them as well.

I found it annoying in the beginning as well with my FE2 but its kinda nice to have a tactile position to know your cam is off.
I would always forget my F3 and now my F4 on for days on end.

On the contrary, the Nikkormat FTn doesnt do it, so im constantly worried it'll fire if I got it in a bag or something, despite its shrouded release.

I was under the impression the only reason D610 was created was because some D600 had dirty sensors, or something.

What's the best 50mm prime I can get for the FM2n? I'm looking to do small gigs like Christmas card photos and engagement shoots for friends. I'm looking at the 50mm f/1.8 Series E AIS since it's small, light, versitile, and pretty affordable. Is there a better option?

"Series E" was what Nikon put on their lenses that they were afraid were so cheap that they'd cheapen the "NIKKOR" brand name if they put it on them.
Nothing wrong with it, but it was not the top of the top line 50mm.
Spend an extra $20 and get the 50mm NIKKOR 1.8, it will at least be multicoated.

Honestly, it was the middle of Covid, I was stuck at home for months, and I was in a really bad place. I needed something to so that was outside, away from electronics, and super analog. I had been toying around with some cameras I got second hand from friends and family that either used discontinued film formats or were from the 50s and only half worked, but caught the bug anyways. I looked up "fully manual cameras" that had a light meter (I didn't want to deal with Sunny 16) because I just needed to get away from electronics and screens and beeping things, and maybe needed the feeling of control and agency (man, those were rough times). The Nikon FM fit the bill, and I found an ebay haul for 200 bucks that was a body, a few beat up lenses, and a camera case of equipment. It got me started and I've been collecting fun bargains and curiosities. A Pen EES-2 for point and shoot blasting, a Minolta 7S I found at an antique mall. Even upgraded to an FM2 along the way. I've really loved the Nikons I've had, they're great and rugged. And the mechanical feel of the film advance is incredibly satisfying.

So to your question, why the FM line? No clue, other than it was the Fully Manual that came up in my Google search, and the deal I found fit my needs. And at this point, I couldn't see myself using anything else. Even the FM3 starts getting too many electronic contrivances. I just think analog things are neat.

Oh man, two extra stops on the bottom end, that's crazy. But it's several times what I can afford (for now). Maybe I'll try to get some more Christmas shoots with friends and family, and I'll put what I pull together for a lens like this.

I have a couple of mechanical Canons, but I'm thinking it would make more sense to have an FM because then it could share the AI/AI-S and AF-D lenses with my DSLRs. pretty much I just want a full frame fuji Xpro3 with a rangefinder or a nikon Df with a split prism viewfinder.
it doesn't seem like I'm alone from what I can gather while trying to find this online. It's like these companies are allergic to making money off of people like me.
Guess I'll continue buying used gear and just get my film scanned but really it's a pain and sometimes it'd be nice to be able to be lazy and be able to copy images directly off of my camera or an sdcard.

Throwaway picture from one of the first events I documented with my 35mm lens. It was much better suited lens in documentary work, unlike the 58mm lens at least the 35mm was weather sealed. Never liked to shoot portraits with the 35mm lens, but it got the job done when it was needed, but almost always I also had to also use 85mm lens.

If you go back to 2012-2014 and read reviews/forum posts about the FX cameras that were new at that time, like D6xx, D800, 810, D750, etc., there’s all these boomers saying things like “I’m not using this, it doesn’t have the good colors of my D700”, “the flesh tones are not good for portraits”, “they fucked up the colors in order to get more megapixels”, or “they fucked the colors to get higher ISO”.
And the responses are all like, “lol you just don’t like the Jpegs you need to shoot raw”
All these arguments seem to have dried up and gone away.
But was there anything more to this than Nikon changing the jpeg profiles?

Somewhat unusual question given I didn't get any results through Google... the viewfinder on my camera seems decentered. All my lenses are blurry unless I shift my eye slightly to the right, then it becomes sharp. Not practical because them I'm not seeing the rightmost third of the viewfinder. The weird thing is basically the same on my second camera, maybe slightly worse, requiring me to shift to the right a little more. Not sure where the defect is... Happens with all six lenses and the two bodies.

Manual focusing when everything else works perfectly isn't hard enough. It's too easy. In order to make people want replace all their pre-AF-S lenses with Z ones, they actively punish you while still pretending to be compatible.
It's the same thing they did with the bottommost entry level DSLRs geting progressively worse:

>D40, D3000-3300 - no screw, but at least the meter works
>D3400, 3500 - no meter
They litrally realized the D3300 wasn't gimped hard enough, so gimped the 3400 worse out of pure spite.

Brought my 135 DC out this evening since the cat was watching the bird show outside... man it's such a nice lens. Plenty of resolution even for a Z9 or D850. Practically the 70-200 S is a better lens, with better range, autofocus and VR, doesn't have the CA issues of the 135 wide open... but there's something special about it. A little bit magical, like the old AI-S 200 f/2 and 85 1.4. Sharp, but not clinical.

35mm f/2 AF-D

Small, light, sharp, wide enough for landscapes and normal enough for portraits of your hiking companions, focuses pretty close for plants. Just a great lens and won’t break the bank if something happens to it like it takes a knock against a boulder or something. Takes small cheap 52mm filters.

That’s if you’re backpacking. If you’re just day hiking then bring whatever, 24-120 is tailor made for this.

Another trick I've found with my Z9, is that sometimes it's a little dumb when it comes to initially locking focus. Once it gets a hold of something, it's very sticky. So I set up Fn1 to Wide-Area L and AF-on, and place that box over the zone I want to focus in. Once it acquires and gets subject detection going, I switch to holding AF-on and it generally stays. My default focus mode is 3D Tracking, with the multidirectional nubbin I can bang the box onto a face or whatever and it tends to stick very well. Auto-area more often than not is frustrating and doesn't choose the right thing to focus on, and if there's a bunch of faces in the frame, it's annoying to have to arrow through to the one you actually want. Much easier to move your framing until the box is on what you want, AF-on, then recompose. Everyone is going to find a different strat that works for them. Practice practice practice. Or you can, you know, try once, fail, then go to a forum to bitch about it.

On my D850 it's pretty good. When adjusting the DC, you need to refocus, the focal plane shifts. Seems like the AF can make sense of it.

On Z9, I just punch in and manual focus, obviously. It's a superb lens. Superior in black and white, due to some lateral fringing on highlights wide open, but it's nothing that can't be corrected.

The old F mount 70-200s weren't all that, just very convenient –though I never tried the FL version that cost an arm and a leg. I think the new Z 70-200 is tremendous though, way way better, so good that I question whether I even need the 85 prime.

I have the old VR1 2.8, it's pretty good. About as good as my Canon L was. Feels great in the hand. VR is okay enough. Very convenient, yes, but the f/1.4 and f/2 telephotos I have will beat it at the same apertures.

I can kind of understand their absence on mirrors bodies but in that case it should also be trivial to implement a rangefinder (not necessarily optical) of some kind and emulate the effect of a range finder or split prism.
I also can understand why dual needle meters are also not implemented on digital bodies but again I feel like it should be pretty easy to emulate them instead of the LED readouts that modern dslr's have which imo are easy to use but aren't nearly as useful.
IMO there is no excuse for the FTZ adapter lacking AI lens coupling. If the Z glass was so fucking good I wouldn't have to be coaxing into "upgrading". Also why do none of the Z mount lenses have an actual aperture ring? Even the retro larp lens doesn't have it.
I've never been sold on the "superior" ergos of the newer nikon bodies. How is chording my camera instead of twisting a knob an improvement?

You can configure the ring to be an aperture ring if you want. And the pro lenses usually have an extra control ring you could do that with. Problem is it’s so sensitive you wouldn’t want to do it as you’ll accidentally change it without realizing. You can get Voigtlanders with proper aperture rings or adapt vintage lenses. If you’re jonesing for an aperture ring that badly it’s a sign you might need a Bessa or Leica in your life.

Also, Nikon DSLRs do have a very accurate focusing rangefinder, it’s the green dot in the viewfinder. Works great, try it.

The 24-120mm f4 is pretty epic as well, in its own right. Sharpness is superb.

Otherwise you can look at the 50mm f2.8 MC. Its supposed to be very good at infinity distances. Most of the bad reviews concern its close-up image quality.

Depends on the DSLR. If it's high end and not a Df it will. If it's the low end with no aperture feeler it'll be okay. That is D3000/D5000 series and some others, I think D40 is one such example.

You can convert a pre-Ai lens to Ai:

It involves some grinding. I've done the reverse conversion with some adapter rings that accepted Ai lenses to make them accept any F-mount, but that's not for Nikon cameras.

Do you shoot a lot of actions, sports, maybe herons catching fish? Because otherwise you won't benefit much. Those cameras are for high FPS shooting, in D6's case at the price of absolute resolution. Z9 doesn't have the resolution "disadvantage" (and I use quotation marks because sometimes having smaller files is desirable) but has a tiny TV instead of a viewfinder. Instead of trying to get the most expensive, sit down and think of the FEATURES you want the most. Then decide accordingly. Otherwise you'll just be disappointed. D6 is an amazing camera at what it does but if I were in your place I'd get a D850 instead. Because I care about reach.

Then as much as it pains me to say the Z9 is best. You get the high FPS and the high reach in one package. Any telephoto will be boosted in comparison to the D6, just because you have almost 50% more pixels per mm. That said look into the D500, for long distance photography it's even better than the Z9.

Gotta say a refurb Z9 for $4500 is probably the best deal in photography period rn. It’s got the high framerate for wildlife and sports and reportage, it’s got the resolution for landscape, architecture, product, it shoots amazing video without needing an external monitor, it’s just a nutso camera that is continually getting firmware updates to be better and better. D6 is a great camera but it’s hard to compare it to the Z9 which just gets better and better the more I shoot it.

I photograph a lot of events so I don't mind having smaller files, they're certainly large enough for any screen usage, and printing up to 16x20" is fine. If it were my only camera... it would probably bug me, knowing there's 36 and 45 MP (and higher) cameras out there.

Especially given that the Zf can use pixel shift to generate a 96 MP image (in a totally controlled studio setting, not sure how great it is at landscape, probably pretty hit or miss and dependent on a scene with no movement), I wouldn't sweat it.

Depends. Fewer megapixels = better in low light. For example, the Sony A7Riv/v with its 60mp sensor is about 2 stops worse than the ZF, and thats after downsizing the Sony pics to match the Nikon. 6400 ISO has the same amount of noise on 24mp as 1600 has on 60mp.

First off, remember, sony cameras are a full EV behind nikon/canon cameras in the edges/corners because lmfao bad mount design. They either had to make E mount wider, or deeper, either/or, without coping with microlens faggotry.

Second, sony dropped the ball extra hard when trying to fix the very minor failings of the third generation (one bad run and dodgy weather sealing - who cares). The sensors got worse. Re-compare with the canon R5, which is one of the few cameras to keep up with the z6ii.

SB-500 has a literal LED video light you can engage, that would definitely help, but... yuck. If you were photographing a wedding dance floor or something it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, I suppose. With Zs in really low light I tend to use scale focusing, flash, and a small enough aperture + manual focus. I'm hoping the f/1.2 lenses will help with that significantly.

and I haven't really used it in the two years I've had it.
I've used my 4x5 and my F3 practically daily.

I think that if I purchase a DF, I'll use it more.

Bigger events (evening / poorly lit), some landscape. The 70-300 is ok for the latter, but when I have it on a sling it extends by itself, and the IQ is fine but could be better.
I was also looking at various 135s but the AIs don't seem to be all that great for this purpose and the AF-D and zeiss are expensive.
The 80-200 is quite a bit bigger than both, the 70-300 and the 180 (which are actually very close in size).
I have the short and covered with the 100 2.8 too.

It's well corrected even wide open, backgrounds are silky smooth, snapshit level whatever portraits come out stunning.

nikon is not retarded enough to write corrections to raws, not like they have to anyways with 0.5-1ev less vignetting on every lens
S line lenses are totally worth it and i wonder if i should have bought the 35mm f1.8 to go with the 85mm instead of the 24-70 f4
noise characteristics are MUCH better even at the maximum native ISO, where it still looks better than my phone
SOOC jpeg noise reduction is a bit too aggressive and waxy at all levels
eye AF in stills is a little worse from some angles and better head on
AF kind of sucks in video at least with this lens unless you use lock on subject tracking (which is right there on nikon vs. a menu option on sony)

totally missing and somewhat important:
AF-D support (sony already did it years ago. when ftz3?)
weather sealed megadap ETZ adapter

worth it?
i don't think i'd do it if i had the newest and bestest A7R V or a9iii or planned on getting one and wanted the lenses built up, but it's better than a lesser snoy, and I like the controls/colors more than canon (having used an 80d) and a lot more than pentax

I got the af 50mm/1.8g and the af 28-80/3.3.
I'm thinking of getting the 35mm/1.8 . Second hand would be about 100 euros. It would be to do street photos at night and use as main one during the day. I'd like a wider angle than the 50 which feels a bit cramped sometimes, but still something fast. the 1.4 lenses are way more expensive and looking at the technical reviews don't really seem to show the justification for such an increase in price relative to the 1.8s. What do you guys think ?

Isn't that the apsc one? People usually recommend the 35 f/2. Any wider than that will either be f/2.8 or expensive. Maybe except the irix 15 f/2.4

D850 lens mounts are strong...right ? I just got a tamron 150-600 g2 and was dicking around with it in the house and didn't quite stick to supporting this setup by the lens all the time. Sometimes body only and it's a 4.4 lb lens. I guess if it didn't snap off I probably didn't fuck something up? Not going to make a habit of it...

Olympus om1 is a good companion to the f100. It is fully manual but has a way bigger viewfinder than the f100 so it’s really easy to manual focus. Also the lenses from the om1 era are totally different so you will end up with very diff looking film photos to your f100
Om1 is cheap too and a completely diff shooting experience being fully manual.

I had a f100 and a d800 shooting together but the film photos felt a bit dry using the same dslr lenses as digital.

It was only when I went to the om1 with the old 70s lenses that it really got that old retro film look. I do use a light meter with the om1 as it does not have spot meter like the f100

50 and 35 are very similar. IMO you only “need” one in the 35/40/50 range. 20 is extremely different though. Great lens but pretty specifically an ultrawide. 50 and 28 coexist very nicely, you could shoot most documentary work with those two lenses and nothing else. 35 is a great one-and-done FL I find. If I was limited to a single length for a year, I’d pick 35.

I’m holding off for the even faster 35. The 1.8 is kind of hazy wide open so it’s basically a big super sharp 2.8. Remember you can adapt e mount lenses and use them with less vignetting and the 35mm f1.4 gm is one of the best.

I'd say that's a sensible choice for birbs if you're willing to buy used. The AF system is top-tier to this day. Think about what lens you want to put on it though, assuming you don't have one already. The standard F-mount budget choice is the 200-500/5.6, which is surprisingly good for how comparatively inexpensive it is. It'll also work fine on an FTZ if you upgrade in the future, but since lots of people have been doing that recently, F-mount everything is pretty cheap used. Remember that you're still buying an SLR so you get to do all the AF fine-tune stuff.

Tye 28 has a plastic mount too. I actually lije it more and more, bc the lens’ mount is softer so it conforms & snugs to tye body’s stainless mount without ever scratching & galling on it like other metal mounts do. Its a satsfying snug. And while I hate that these best-evar optics are now all in these cheap chinese plastic enclosures, the 28 (&40)is so light & short theres practically no force being applied to it ever. That said i’m gonna list my 28, bc the 26 is just that little bit more pocketable even though its less sharp than the 28. All these lenses are too goddamn big.

Almost hit a d850 & f6 on the same day, til i tealized i’d need to also invest in yet another set of lenses incompatible w bodies that came before & after them. Irritating, bc those are excellent bodies & lenses, but dead-ended.

Wdym? The high end nikon dslrs can use every nikkor lens made since the 50's up until the latest AF-S G VR. Basically anything that isn't mirrorless mount.

That's the value zone. Those are the cameras where the money you spend for full frame is not that much more than crop, and the benefits of full frame most fully outweighs the cost.
The D600 and D750 had, at one time, tarnished reputations due to factory recalls early in their history. But its been enough time now that the bed ones are mostly out of the ecosystem and people seem to have forgiven them, especially the 750.

>D700 - consider if extremely poor or you're the kind of person who collects old digital cameras for their "film like" sensor
>D600/D610 - not much diff between these, these are good bargains, they are essentially full frame versions of the contemporary APS-C D7xxx
>D750 - spring for this is you can afford it, the autofocus is more advanced than the D6xx, and higher ISO, I have one of these and the entire ISO range is "usable" for 2k internet size photos
>D780 - so new, I'm not sure why you wouldn't just go mirrorless if you can afford this
