I actually don't understand how normal people go about photography. Despite having read books on the subject and talking to people I can't actually understand any of the rules.

I just look at things from different angles and imagine where my camera's aspect ratio will crop things then I adjust things and take pictures. Is there any actual benefit to understanding the "rules" or is it like grammar where you can just inuitively grasp everything.
