learning flash

No.4248429 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
I decided to learn to use a flash and so I've been going through the Strobist guide. I bought a version of the entry level kit but with a TTL godox flash instead of the fully manual one he recommended.
I'm going through the beginning of the guide and he has you taking portrait photos with an umbrella. OK, but they all look like shit for me, because he's taking them on some sort of black backdrop and I'm taking them against a yellow wall, which is all I have in my apartment.
He didn't mention buying any backgrounds / backdrops (I don't know what the right term is) as part of the starter kit. Is this just an oversight? Should I be picking up a backdrop kit off amazon so I have something to take decent photos against? Any recommendations if so? I feel like it's pointless to learn to shoot portraits with flash if I can't actually end up producing usable portraits.
