How can I make a digital video look like film?

Is there a way to make basic digital videos look like film? Some kind of program, or filter, or something?

I'm a n00b, and I'm poor, so I'm ideally looking for something free I can download and just slap it onto my videos. Any help is appreciated. THANK YOU.

No, it just looks like fake film and in between things. Embrace digital if you can't afford film. Faux film aesthetic is worse than embracing digital, it always looks off.

people seem to overdo it all the time. i don't think it's impossible to get a "film look" (as seen in https://www.yedlin.net/DisplayPrepDemo/) but i don't think it's worth the effort to painstakingly emulate the quirks of film when you can already get a "cool" look without them

start learning how to color grade in Davinci and study film stock tones/colors and try to match. Watch some youtube videos how to do this. There are lots of LUTS and tutorials how to grade like this. Be warned though trying to match the subtle details of film takes quite some effort

Ridley Scott spend a few million clams having a company make him a nice LUT to get the look of his favorite stock, but still didn't end up using it because part of the look comes from the interaction between the way the lens elements treat certain hues & intensities and the way the films chemistry deals with them and the way the chemical levelling brings certain things to the top and produces chaotic effects. Their conclusion was that cost aside, you technically can’t actually get something as simple as a LUT applied to a flattened digital image to do it. You’d need to shoot each color channel separately and do a fuckton if processing of each individially and then more comping them & it”d be cheaper to just start a company and produce the film again.

Not really, no... You can get the color grading to look exactly like film, along with simulating all the imperfections but the footage itself (the file) and the end result wont look anything like film, even with the best film sim money can buy, only because modern cameras are too high res and modern lenses render clinical and flat looking footage and images.

You'd have to resort to something with a low res sensor and a really expensive (or an older, low element count) lens... OR... Throw like 10-15 racks on an old school cine setup...

Also, SONY's old high end (expensive) camcorders from the 90's. that used cassettes, do a really damn good of a job for that purpose and the best part is you can find both the camcorders and cassettes for dirt cheap, no matter where you live... I got a huge ass, professional Sony camcorder, never cared to look up the model name, I just know that it was made in 1994 and I got it together with a full briefcase of lenses and another briefcase full of cassettes, for only 400 bucks. That's the closest to film you will ever get. Well... Technically, cassettes are film...

Please tell us, what, in the purely mathematical field of lens design, is quantifiable as 3d rendering or whatever? Looking back into what photographers past called 3d lenses or whatever they were simply very sharp wide open compared to typical SLR slop where the mirror blocked the space for corrective elements.

Fuck even sensor size argument fags can link to jim kassons blog with an equation on it. Do you really have nothing? ALL of lens design is pure math. Always has been. Tell us which equation quantifies how flat or not the "rendering" is.

Are you sure it's not just the wonky field curvature on zooms and shitty but highly corrected lenses (ie: some sigma and snoy gm lenses) that causes objects that are in front of or behind the subject to be too in focus for where they are? Is it sharpness falloff that emulates the effect of the fovea if you look at it right? If you can't say what your issue actually is, maybe you should shut up about gear for the rest of your life. There is nothing worse than a gearfag who has strong opinions but is perpetually wrong and doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. worse than /m43/ tier because at least they try to sound smart.

But these are all things modern MILC lenses do better, including being super sharp in the center wide open and having resolution falloff towards the center.

they use those lenses for two reasons
color matched sets (if you buy 5 canon lenses colors will look different on all 5)
being rich and trying to enjoy it (strictly speaking, vaucheron constantin watches are fragile and inaccurate, but the rich buy them to try and get some privileged enjoyment from their bank account, it’s not about how good they are and never has been)

Matched colors, flare, AND matched bokeh, actually. Its a very time consuming thing to design and consistently manufacture but you don’t get jarring shit like cuts to and from two different cameras with the bokeh and sky looking completely different just because cam B used the 40mm instead of the 28mm.

Besides the already mentioned color matching there's issues like focus breathing or worse, anamorphic ratio changes. A cinema lens is meant to be dynamic. You don't want your shots ruined by using something where basic cinematic techniques bring unrelated technical issues into the frame. Cinema is first and foremost sculpting in time, and a dull chisel can crack the piece of rock you were trying to cut precisely.

Fren, just buy some NICE vintage lenses, embrace 4k and try to tell a good story.
Also, If you end up using filters like black pro mist, never go beyond 1/4.

It’s the exact same story as with photography, digital can never look exactly like film. Smarter everyday on YouTube has a really good series explaining how film works. Once you watch that you will understand why digital cameras cannot match the look. Film is actually very complex, so much more than people realise.

If you want the film look you have to use film, ultimately it’s $$, film is going to cost more than digital and be more work. You have to want it or it’s not for you.
