They used to be used for checked-in luggages, unfortunately now they are replacing those machines in OP for carry-on as well.

I did fly from Europe to US in 2019, landed at LAX, and they were installing CT scanners.
I had a lot of 4x5 film with me, so I politely asked for a hand-check.
My request was denied and I was forced to either let them scan my film (fortunately I was in a lane where there was no CT scanner yet) or open the boxes in daylight.
You can imagine what kind of disaster that would have been.
In short, OP's machine did not harm any of my transparencies and negative film.
However, I'm 99% sure a single pass in a CT scanner would have permanently destroyed my photographs.
