Hi p, can anyone recommend a digital body to scan 35mm and medium format film with?
Already have a light panel, film carriers and a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 1:1.

Have a Fujifilm X-T10 but using it is a miserable experience: There is no interface to tether it to PC or charge-by-cable, so it has to use battery power & shoot to SD card. The battery/SD compartment is next to the mount, so to access them you have to take the camera off the copy stand. Wifi interface is a slow mess, only connects to phones.

Also, I notice some bloom & flare from the light source, how can I avoid this?

35mm (and 110) scanning is all I’m doing this year. I tried a d800, a z6, a z7, a Sony Asr7xyz-iv, half a dozen lenses, and a pile of homemade blackout shrouds & whatnot, and have finally settled on the Final Solution. I got the new Zf and the Nikkor 50mm Z Macro lens & ES2, and at 96mpx output it outperforms every other rig I’ve come up with BECAUSE Nikon makes all of it and designed it all intentionally to work together, so the camera knows exactly when the lens is doing, the Nikon software in ur kompooter knows exactly what to do with pixel shift sets and lens distortion and knows how to unfuck all the bullshit that you’re stuck chasing around in other setups. The only contender was the Sorny, bc that fucker has a 60mpx sensor in it and pickleshifts to 240mpx, but for 2 things: 1, it’s dumb, has no idea what a macro lens is or what any numbers were when it took the shot, so you’re stuck eyeballing out whatever spatial & color distortions were in the lens & 2, 240mpx at 1:1 is well beyond the resolving power of not just the film, but the lenses used to originally shoot the slides & negs you’re scanning. You will zoom in to see the edges of colors in the emulsion layer perfectly rendered to smoothest gradients only to zoom out several times to realize how blurry the finest lenses actually were until about 2010. But you can halve your megapickles to 120 and still see all that. 240 is so far beyond what is useful for 35mm media you end up regretting saddling yourself with the Sony just to get it, because nevermind the shit software, the Sony is a fucking miserable menu system & shooting experience to shoot with the rest of the time you own it.

As for OP most any mirrorless from a regular manufacturer will tethering support and regular card placement. Nikkor is still good although 100 is comfier working distance. R8 or r6 idk jus something normal

Great guide, did you use only non-Sony macro lens with A7R? It should be very well aware of 90mm and what it does.

The 2 big HOWEVER’s are 1, that if you have any medium format media to digitize, the extra push to 240mpx of the Sony will actually matter, because of the greater img information contained in ea frame and also the greater resolving power of those older lenses, and 2, if you have smaller 110 film to digitize, you’ll want the Laowa 90mm 2:1 magnifier lens, so you can zoom in and fit the image on your sensor, and not waste more than half the photosites you spent all this time & money on processing a black border. The 90 is a big improvement over previous Lapwa’s in sharpness and clarity, but the downside is that it is totally fucking dumb, so it tells the camera no useful info, so your scans are dependent entirely on its physical optics & eyeballing the results.

Yeah, poorly written, sorry aboot that. considering Nikons fully contained Macro system (incl software) was better put together Sony lost out on those grounds already, and then realizing the Sony Macro, like the Nikon Macro, don’t go past 1:1 & I’d need to use the Laowa anyway, the Sony just got clunkier and kludgier to use until it just became a nice big (unnecessarily big?) sensor in a halfassed system surrounding it.

My only irritation with the Nikon system is having just layed out $2k for a camera body with a decades worth of other awesome improvements, but built around the same sensor as a 5yo Z6 worth $700, when my decade olde d800 was already at 36mp. Only grates on me when not scanning, & comparing new & old img’s from shooty shooty mcbooty instead.
