I see you autismos talk about this shit all the time but have no idea what it means. Can you backtrace where a photo came from? Is there a reason you guys bash the new image formats like webp, does it have tracking or telemetry shit in it?

Yeah, you can figure out what approx geographical area, and clues can basically reduce your area a lot. There's a whole genre of this on Youtube. There's some guy who is really fast at it. I took a photo of a Google Streetview car the other day. I hope my camera obscures my face enough and the image is posted. In a way, it was a selfie. Google streetview, and aerial photography, plus many other things like that, basically make everyone highly spyable.

When you take a picture on a digital camera some have the option of writing a little bit of text in the file describing the model of the camera, it's manufacturer, and in some cases the settings.
On 4chan that data is usually stripped and burnt to prevent hidden messages / idiots doxing themselves except for this specific board where certain info such as what camera and settings a picture is taken with are kept for context. Some phone apps can't see it tho.

I don't get it why picture metadata isn't used more for the nontechnical information such as captions, descriptions, subjects, etc. That seems infinitely more useful information than knowing a photo was taken at a shutter speed of 1/500s.

Because the texhnical info is added automagically by the camera and captions etc. have to be added manually

Metadata contains a lot of info, most important on /p/ are settings. Focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO. Gearfags are happy to see camera brands and models in EXIF, too.

Specifically on /p/ you can't, EXIF may contain location information. If it does, 4chan will destroy the entire EXIF on upload.
