Forgive me for being a newfag here, but I recently came across a Nikon d7100 for 70$ USD and bought it as my first camera. it came with af-s nikkor 85mm f/1.4g lens.

I know absolutely nothing about camera's. did I waste my money? can it take good pics? do I need any other lenses to take good pics?

Fuck, that's the ONE glass I'm constantly looking for, but they're always insanely expensive.
Good find.
Now you just have to get a fullframe body.
D700 is usually cheap. D800/D810 is still amazing. D850 is expensive, but still pretty much the best DSLR there is.

some student probably lost the charger, or they wanted to keep it to use it with any of other nikons it can be used with.
even the newer bodies that charge the batteries while they sit in the camera, they can also be charged by that same charger too.
but yeah that is an absolute steal for $70, if it is in working condition someone clearly did not know what they had.

I started with the D3100, they're not outstanding but they work.

That's all you need really. I still have my D3100 and use it when I'm going somewhere I worry I could break my OM-D.

Lucky man, yeah absolutely keep that, this is a very good lens and also good camera, you may have already noticed it's really long and captures only a small section of the reality around you, so if you want wide you might want to find a lens that has less mm, like 18-55 kit zoom. But honestly just roll with this one, best portrait/subject fov.
