From a purely business oriented perspective, it seems like Nikon has just suicided.
People new to photography will likely go to Sony mirrorless, while those who are heavily invested in Nikon and F-mount glass will
>Stay on F-mount, which is basically discontinued, earning Nikon nothing
>Invest tens of thousands in all new glass in addition to a new camera (this opens up the path to choose another system instead)
>Give up on photography

With the Z-mount, Nikon basically made a competitor to itself, and offered nothing to the already heavily invested fans. For a market leader to do this... It just seems supremely stupid to me. Imagine the millions if dollars lost.
It also works as a competitor to other mirrorless systems, of course, but ONLY for new adopters, and even then it struggles to measure up to the market leader in that segment (Sony).
