Program mode lets you change aperture/shutter to your own liking after the camera has picked it for you and will compensate one or the other depending what you change.
It will also not pop the flash unless you manually actuate it.

My film camera has no battery in it so yes I need more.
Light meter apps on phones have gotten really good these days though.
