I wonder if sensor manufacturers are trying to find a way to reduce halation/sensor bloom?
Is the answer pixel shifting?

Its the thing I hate the most about editing shots - getting any amount of edge glow.

There are many things in play there related to how signal is sampled from points that have less frequency than the result image generated in the end. If there is detail that is higher in frequency than half sample rate, it also causes aliasing ringing. AA filters that reduce this effect do it by blurring the image. So, you really can't expect anything crisp at all at the pixel level.
Rumors say that Sony is working on a layered sensor, that will allow sampling every color in every pixel (that makes marketer count each pixel 3 times to compensate for false advertisements from the past). I hope that will make things look better on a smaller scale.

Another fool who doesnt know how demosaicing actually works. Sad.

Foveon is 50% sharper, not 3-4x sharper, than the most basic open source bayer demosaicing algorithm. With good proprietary software the difference is noticeably less.

Not really, I've seen photographs taken of mountain ranges with visible halos, even though they were using the newest, most expensive glass.
