how much better are pictures from a canon r5 in comparison to a 90d?

currently sporting the 90D, but would like to up my game in quality and i'm considering purchasing an r5 to bridge the gap with all the full frame photographers.

Would you advise me upgrading? Is it even an upgrade?

If you are bothered by diffraction on the 90D you will be bothered by it on an a7RIV/V. The pixel pitch is pretty close. Diffraction is a largely overstated.
Also new Canon sensors are actually better than Sony, from ISO 800 onwards Canon's the cleanest one until Sony's noise reduction kicks in at ISO 16090 to cope. Z8 always lags behind, also it doesn't even have a real shutter.

Actually there's a non-zero possibility that the photos on the R5 will be worse, because he'll no longer be looking at the real world but the camera's interpretation of it with some milliseconds of lag to top it off. He won't be seeing the scene through the lens but a representation of it. And he'll experience eye strain much earlier too. I wouldn't make the switch unless I needed to shoot with ultrawides, the 90D is one of the best cameras money can buy.

I didn't defend Nikon lmao, I ignored them based on them offering no edge over Canon alone and lagging behind in DR.

As you see the Canon dots are always peeking on top of the Sony ones, because the DR is superior. Sony only gets an edge at ISO 16090 with the triangles, but the DR was dropping as you can see in the ISO 12800 dot.
Your chart backs up what I said, from ISO 800 onwards the R5 is just better.

Not really. The Z6II/ZF sensor is much better than the R6II sensor for photography and the Z8 and Z9 absolutely wreck the R3 where it matters. They also currently have the edge in native lenses, while canon is developing like sony E mount if they play their cards right - nothing good for 6+ years - but they probably won't. For real photographers, lenses matter much more than 0.3 stop PDR differences. Canon's market is mostly videography and event snapshitters, so the RF catalog is mostly just shitty zooms and f1.2 primes for the discerning wedding photographer (like flipping mcburgers with a finely polished titanium spatula)

You're switching the topic, and regardless of the veracity or lack thereof of your statement it has nothing to do with R5 vs Z8, which is the context of our discussion. It's a wild goose chase I won't be lead on.
R5 vs Z8, R5 is simply superior. Had you posted the chart with the Z8 included your self-own would be even more obvious. At some ISOs it's a full stop behind and it doesn't even have a real shutter, it's no competition.

User error, learn to expose.

ISO under 800 matters for landscape and other tripod-bound genres. If you want to freeze movement you need the higher ISOs. It's almost always better to shoot at a higher ISO than to raise exposure in post.

The image quality has plateaued long time ago. You'll get better autofocus, IBIS and low light performance. Manual focus lenses are easier with proper focus peaking too. In the end, if you have good light, the glass matters much more than the body.
You probably should wait a bit more. R5 will probably get a Mk2 and see a more price drops in the near future.

The r5 is “overpriced” for photographers because most of its value comes from video features and framerates. Meanwhile people are still shooting the olympics on DSLRs.

With Canon it's a little easier to notice the difference since their cameras use near mft levels of crop. But again, there is practically no difference between mft and full frame anyways so ymmv.

I'm a casual photographer and only really bother when I'm out on a hike/walk. Here's some snaps with my 90d and first edition 70-200 and 2x teleconverter. For me the camera is more than fine and it's up to me to get good photos.

I've never felt like it was the cameras fault I didn't get a good photo so I've been more than happy with it.

It's also so fucking nice that I can get second-hand lenses for cheap. I got my entire kit (90d, 70-200mm f2.8, 16-35mm f4, 2x teleconverter) for less than an R5.

The R5 is premium priced for features 99.9% of photographers do not need. It's not a good example of full frame. and then we have the sampling rate vs full well capacity argument to have, and the big debate over which mount has the better glass for less (especially for that pixel pitch) - please, let's not have those arguments. It has to do with detail and overall SNR vs color accuracy, mostly.

The 90d comes out somewhere between middling to losing hard. Most people are happiest on ~24mp full frame. Those who are not, are happiest on a high end micro four thirds.

Crop sensor DLSR = crap shitter dumb sucker loser retard.

Is it visible? Yes, in the shadows. Canon achieves a FAKE dynamic range measurement before DCG kicks in at middling ISOs - its just forced shadow NR. Shadow detail is mushed!

This is a specialized camera that beats out other FFs in some areas by losing out in others. It is very expensive because very few people need one. It is not merely "the final upgrade for a canon user" - it is a TOOL for a subset of journalists.

Don't pay $3k+ for this camera unless sports/action photography is your passion and you're a resolution freak. It's not really THE best at everything else, and the price should be prohibitive - you're very close to being able to afford a GFX100 body at these price tiers, and could buy MULTIPLE other full frame cameras.

It is a brand fucking new sensor on par with sony flagships retard. It has literally no dark current noise. It can read out from both gain stages to take one single photo with expanded DR higher than that chart for shutter speeds under 1/60 and even without that advantage it has more tonal range than any apsc.

The catch is it’s less sensitive so if you give it the same amount of light as a typical camera you’ll get less signal = more noise. Also, it’s micro four thirds so there’s always going to be 4x more photon shot noise even if you always ETTR correctly.

Anon, a system camera (interchangeable lens camera) is part of a system. GFX lenses are slow (not even only in equivalent terms) so it sucks for low light. It gathers less light than an actual low light FF build despite the marginally larger sensor because of this. And its real advantage would be at base ISO anyways.
Lenses>bodies.
Get a Zenit-M with its f/1 lens for the price of a GFX without lens.

depends Your style, never tried 90D or R5, but 200D and R8, R8 will focus on human eye like nobrainer, 90D shadows can not be lifted inhuman metrics, have not shot R8 in dark therefore do not yet know how much shadows can be lifted

No, equivalence is an easy way to be on the same page when describing settings. It's how you ensure you're gathering the same amount of light across formats. You don't like equivalence? Talk about physical (not relative) aperture then. Same thing. It's no coincidence the size of the entrance pupil of the Leica Nocticron is the same as an 85mm f/2.4 like the Zeiss Loxia.

Equivalence is fake because real cameras dont adhere to standardized tech that makes equivalence possible. Equivalence comes with such a laundry list of “and IF” statements and “but this does not make a noticeable difference if” clauses that it does not actually affect real world photography. Only dpreview’s shoddy studio scene that requires you NOT to understand how digital cameras operate and differ to believe its results.

Sorry but your precious “equivalence” can’t even correctly compare a d750 to a gh5 let alone a 100mp CMF camera to a 50mp FF. There are too many variables and potential post processing techniques for simple equivalence to matter BEFORE reaching the simple fact that in the majority of photographs that are not of sleeping pets equivalent apertures make little difference and anyone who actually needs an ILC shoots at least 80% of their work with flash or a tripod. Get fucked russiaboo.

Anyways, photography? Yes. Sufficiently different cameras defeat equivalence in all but the most retarded and unrealistic test conditions with the least relevance to real photography. The GFX100 is one such example. It retains colors in underexposure as well as a ~42mp FF while being capable of producing images as clean as and more detailed than a 50mp FF using a lower ISO if the 100mp images are correctly scaled to half the linear resolution. It is significantly better than smaller pixeled crop sensor cameras far beyond equivalence. While you whine that the primes are only f1.4 “equivalents”, this is meaningless except for DOF. AND ff f1.2s are all shit wide open anyways. Canon’s vignettes 3 fucking stops. They are made to be stopped down. All G mount lenses are stellar wide open.

as stated its obvious. equivalence simply does not matter unless you are playing chart games to prove a bigger sensor gets more light. if you take a real camera outside of your house and then take that camera home and open up the raws you will find it rarely applies.

This is just factually wrong. In fact, the GFX has less photons per colored pixel than any FF shooting equivalently, simply because the FFs go up to 61MP and if they're shooting equivalently they're getting the same light spread over less pixels.
