Anyway. I think it just stopped being fun because it stopped being amusing to the subject. It's just another fatguy with a camera now.

Used to give people packfilm photos of them in cosplay but that had to stop when it went to a hundred quid a cartridge (That might not even work)

I have an old Canon AE-1, and the shutter stopped working. I opened it up, here's what I found (pic is from youtube): my magnet does not stay stuck to the copper coils (red box) when I wind the film (the arm with the blue arrow should push the magnet towards the coils). I played with it mechanically and managed to fire the shutter once. I'm guessing the magnet is dirty and that's why it won't stick? I'll try cleaning it, but I'm open to other suggestions.

My grandfather gave me his old camera with 3 lenses. It came with some extremely expired film which i shot and sent off for development, can't wait to see how it turned out.

I only ever shot disposables and basic cheap film cameras 20+ years ago so this is all new to me
I don't have extremely high expectations for the first 2 rolls at all
One question i have is about the aperture
I have 3 lenses and for 2 of them i can see the blades of the aperture closing and opening as i click through the setting.
One of them i don't see that happening. Is it stuck open and no good? I'm assuming it is repairable but maybe not

Trigger the shutter and see what it does. Some lenses have a manual/auto switch on them on M42. The manual switch stops it down when you're looking through the viewfinder, while auto lets the camera do it only on taking the photo.

I has the thing on the lens set to 16, tried with the lens off the body and pushed the lever in back and nothing, on the body i tried the depth of field preview button and nothing, tried the mirror lockup and nothing, finally took a photo on the "B" setting and held it for a few seconds and still nothing.

What lens is it? Most of those Minolta lenses are cheap secondhand. If you want it badly save up and grab another copy unless you really wanna learn. If you do DIY it get the right tools for it.

I love the two SRTs I have, even if neither is in perfect condition. Minolta made some excellent glass that as others have said is now quite cheap. picrel was shot on my SRT201 with a 100mm f/4 macro. if your TTL meter works I'd say reference it with another meter that you trust, mine tends to say I should overexpose by 1.5-2 stops from what my digital meter says.

Apparently taking the lens apart is incredibly simple, but my issue may not be. There is a mechanical linkage between the aperture ring and the aperture, my ring clicks between the settings freely but no blade movement.

Really sucks bros. I just want to have a highly reliable mechanical rangefinder with TTL metering and 1-2 lenses that are unbelievably sharp yet with some personality. Looking into the Bessa R2M/R3M, still a bit ridiculously priced especially for a plastic body but better priced than a Leica at least.
What's my next best option, the Canon 7?

I think I worded it wrong. What I meant was wouldn't the CLE become a paperweight if the electronics fail? Unlike a Leica M5 or an M6 where the camera will continue to function just fine even if the electronics for the lightmeter fails.
Speaking of the M5, seems like eBay prices are about the same as a Bessa R2M/R3M. I wonder if I should consider that instead of the Bessa. I don't mind the look at all, as long as it has a working lightmeter (for the time being) and a hot shoe, I'd be happy.

you'd have a better chance at repairing a CLE's electrical issues yourself than you would at repairing a leica shutter

if the metering cells failed you could bypass them and just use manual exposure

How much worse are the soviet knockoffs compared to the real thing? Talking about a Zorki, Kiev or Fed againts a Leica. Because you can get a Zorki 4 or a Fed 2 for $50-100.

Is the reliability issues of electronics in rangefinders like the Bessa R2A blown out of proportion or is it grounded in reality like the complaints with the Contax G1/G2 and T2?
I know they're much younger than the Contax cameras, but would it be a safe bet to grab a clean R2A instead of an R2M and not stress about it becoming a paperweight in the near future if taken care of?
I ask this as a Contax G1 user whose cameras works perfectly fine at the moment but I feel like I need to offload this thing ASAP before I lose money on it. The 45mm f2 produces such beautifully sharp photos which I can only hope I can similarly achieve on an R2A without paying too much for lenses and that's what is stopping me so far from getting rid of the G1 because honestly the G lenses are pretty cheap for what they are.

How do you still afford to shoot film these days? Both film and processing prices become insanely high in the last few years. It literally made more financial sense for me to drop film and purchase a new mirrorless camera.

Does anyone know what film Rite Aid 200 speed film would be? I'm going to shoot some expired rolls of it but it would be nice to know.

I have enough rolls to do some bracketing on one of them and then I'll see what speed to shoot the rest at.

i find the r2 to feel solid. i did have an issue last fall where the shutter button was unresponsive but the problem went away by the start of this year. i'm glad because there isn't anyone i could find in the usa who services voigtlander rangefinders except perhaps KEH... idk about the canon and nikon rangefinders, but i take the bessas over the cle and contaxes with regards to longevity. maybe look into hexars? if there was a clean, simple solution, it would be known already. if you want to shoot a rangefinder, reliability and ease of repair is just one of the things you compromise on compared to a good slr

Has great reviews (as a seller), and looks like they're an Asian international student. 1.35L of albumen made with eggs from my chickens. Used like 50 eggs.
4x5 fp4+ devved in pyrocat HD is apparently the way to go for albumen printing. It requires very high contrast negatives because the dynamic range of albumen printing paper is extremely high.

I'm going to try selling some alongside my eggs at the farmers market if I can produce good enough quality prints.

A fun historical fact about albumen prints and photographers of the past is that they used to keep flocks of chickens at their printing studio so they had a steady supply of eggs for making albumen prints.

Sometimes those phone light meters have a calibration setting. May or may not actually be a useful calibration.
I've used a phone app light meter and it was decent. They really excel in very low light metering. You can get an extra 4 or 5 stops of metering in the dark compared to most handheld light meters.

I want to get another lens for my ETR-Si. Currently have MC 50mm f/2.8, MC 105mm f/3.5 and MC 150mm f/3.5. I am debating between:

and

The 100-220 will give me more total reach, and would allow me to carry one lens which could do the work of the 105 and the 150, but it weighs half a ton (comes with a tripod foot for a reason) and uses 95mm filters when every other Bronica lens uses 62mm filters. The 180mm is basically the ideal portrait lens for the system, will give a little extra reach over the 150mm, and should theoretically have the edge in sharpness over the 100-220mm since it's a prime, but on the other hand I'm not sure that even with the PE coatings and lens design it will be *that* much better/different from the 150mm. It's also more expensive than the zoom, but substantially lighter. Thoughts?

I have a MF zoom that also weighs an incredible amount. Even tho it is lighter than the 3 lenses it covers I would still be hesitant to take it on anything more than a roughly 1 hour excursion. For me three lighter lenses in a backpack is easier and more convenient than 1 big one around my neck. If you're doing stuff close to faster paced it may work nicely for you.

You may need a monopod to shoot it consistently, so take that into consideration as well.

I brought a wide angle, longish lens, and a normal length macro lens on my hike. Used all 3.

Zoom is good if things are moving fast and you may miss something getting closer/further or switching lenses.

For portrait shoots 2 is usually good unless I need to dial in the framing and I have space limitations.

One thing I wish I knew beforehand would be to get an enlarger timer that can do longer than 60s, especially if you're going to be split grade printing. I've been making a basic 60s time-o-lite work but it became apparent within the first week of use that it is not ideal for long-term use.
Get new RC paper to start with; don't bother with old, potentially fogged secondhand stuff.
Run test strips and write shit down. Write down everything.
Have fun. Once you get started, it's like magic.

That's a good tip. I've got an old 60 second timer I was using as a shelf knickknack, which I'm not even sure works. So I'll try to find one with minute settings rather than waste time attempting to resuscitate that one.

Yeah I always start with fresh materials when I'm learning something, gotta eliminate any material/equipment issues so you can identify the skill issues.

Wow. That's awesome. Very rich looking print! I was doing 8x10 wetplate colloidion for a while before I moved onto real film 8x10. That was very fun and challenging. If you really nail a portrait they are unreal on wetplate.

Here is a phone pic of the image after fixing. I don't have gold toner yet, so I will try out some selenium toner. I may try another and go even darker. I don't have a feel for how much density the fixer removes yet. POPs are really cool.

I got a ziatype kit from bostick and sullivan that is a plat based POP. Should be fun.

Your negative looks good but seems to be a little underexposed. More time and more contrast would help it pop.
Her'es another van dyke. My final project in class is a collection of religious+abandoned things all printed in van dyke. No reason really besides I feel those themes go well with the colors van dyke produces.

I've tried darkroom and I'm really not a fan. The dark stresses me out and I can never seem to get things right. my bf gave me like 500 sheets of various papers he thrifted so i can print for free but I just dislike it lol. I really enjoy the process of painting the emulsion onto the paper, letting them dry, and exposing them and the ESPECIALLY i like watching them develop when you put them in their baths. Its very rewarding :)

I think my scanning rig is fucked up. My photos occasionally get bright towards the edges (once switched to positive) and I'm pretty sure it's because the width of the opening on my scanning attachment is too narrow... Only seems to happen with really bright or really dark photos. To those of you that scan with a camera, what sort of exposure settings to you use for a roll? Av + spot metering so each frame meters as needed or do you set one shutter speed and do that for the whole roll?

The red light is very calming for me. I can lose myself in there. The stressful thing for me is when I tray develop my 8x10 in complete darkness for 15-20 mins with the ticking of my dev timer. Still worth it.

I like that your image really suits the printing style. The cold tones and rough paper definitely add something nice to the overall feel of the image. I'm going to try and do similar with my albumen prints. I live in a pretty rural area so it shouldn't be too difficult.
One of the main reasons I'm making these is so I can take pictures of the chickens that laid the eggs I used to make the printing paper and sell them at the farmers market alongside the eggs. If I get some nice ones I think it could be a real hit. I still have a ways to go before I'm happy with the quality. Thankfully there is nothing major or mysterious I need to figure out. I ran into something like that with wetplates and it took me like 20+ tries to figure out what was going wrong.

Fill up a tray with the hottest water from your tap to quickly heat up your chems and then use them when they get to temp. You only really need a waterbath during dev if you want consistent color between rolls.

I'm not a professional, so no, I don't. These will likely also be scanned and if I ever RA4 print them I won't mind them not being perfect.

Shot this with a special macro lens. 25mm zeiss luminar. It has enough projection to use on 8x10 at about 15-20x magnification. If I remember this is around 10x mag. Tried out pyrocat HD for the first time also. 4x5 delta 100.

Darkroom update:
Got the Beastler home and 90% set up - still need to align it.
Acquired an EL Nikkor 135mm f/5.6 for printing 4x5.
Acquired a grain focuser, easel, and 645 negative carrier for a song.
The 4x5 negative carrier is missing its anti-newton glass, but fortunately I was able to get a replacement, that should arrive Thursday along with dev trays, multigrade filters, and a fresh bulb for the condenser.
The old timer I had sitting on my bookcase turns out to work just fine, although it's very old school. It will work until I can find a good deal on a better one.
Will need to cover the window and make a curtain for the door in the spare bedroom I'm using - I've got some 6 mil thick painters plastic which should do the job.
I should be able to attempt my first print either Friday or this weekend.

Schneider Componon 80mm f/4, it came with the enlarger. Should do the trick for 645 and 6x6.

Just put my first roll through this lens, the Voigtlander Heliar Classic 50mm f/2. This is the collapsible version that came bundled with the 250th anniversary Bessa R2M (see pictured).
Bit of a rare one so not a ton of info or sample photos (on film) online for this lens, excited to put it through its paces and see the results.
I'm impressed with the sharpness so far, but didn't get a chance to see the extent of its character when it comes to DoF and bokeh.

Loading sheet film is really easy after a tiny bit of practice. A lot of photo labs will develop sheet film. You can give them your film holders with the exposed film, or just put the sheets back in the box they came in.

Tray develop is kinda shitty, but you only really need to do that with 8x10. There are sheet film holders for paterson tanks and dedicated light safe sheet film dev tanks.

Large format is pretty fun and the pics are pretty nice.

I was shooting and developing 4x5 for a while before getting this stuff. I used a Steerman Press developing tank and a film changing bag. It takes a little bit of practice (fortunately my film holders came with some long-expired mystery film already in them which I was able to use to practice outside of the bag) but once you get the hang of it it's very easy to get the film into the holders, and then out of the holders and into the tank inside of the bag. Large format is super fun and I would definitely encourage people to try it. You can bag a Graflex Crown Graphic for a couple hundred bucks all day.

Wanking to MF film resolution is a huge fucking waste of time. You CAN get a 7000x7000px scan of 6x6 color negative film (49mp) and basically max out the available resolution but unless you are printing 6x6 at 30x30" (or have access to a printer that can print with photopaper-like resolution, ie: fine art grade lightjet prints) it's a waste of time to grain peep film. We have digital cameras for that.

Instead, skip the middle man and do contact prints or get a good enlarger.

Ilford fp4+ @125 developed with pyrocat HD 2:2:100, fixed with TF4.

Negative was definitely high contrast and this seems to have translated into a much nicer print. May still be a touch under-developed. Still pretty happy with the result. Feels good to be getting better!

I think I will attempt some macro shots of flowers or something next. The printing medium seems really well suited for it.

Thanks! Finished up sensitizing 8 sheets of 8x10 paper today. It's pretty fun, but also kinda annoying. Takes a long time to prepare the paper. 6 minute albumen coat then 2 hour dry repeated 2 times, and then 6 mins in silver nitate and 3-4 hours to dry.
Washing/fixing/toning is like a 1 hour process. Thankfully I got my print washer set up in my darkroom. Using the hose + tray + 5 gallon bucket really sucked lol.

If I have the time I'm going to work on a couple 8x10 shots tommorow.

So very happy with this. Just have to dial in the exposure a bit. 2:45 instead of 3:30. Going to try gold toning now that I have a baseline print.

When I frame it I'm going to crop out the sticker on the right of the ladder so just ignore that. This spot has such pretty light and it is a very convenient height to use a giant view camera with.
I used my Dallmeyer rapid rectilinear for this shot. Using period correct lenses feels so good.

That's split-grade printing, right? I need to practice that. I'm not sure this is the negative for it, even with digital scans I've never been able to get any sky detail out of it - it was taken close to sunset, facing west, on a cloudless day, and a bit overexposed. But I've got some 4x5 landscape shots from a recent trip to New Mexico that would make a good candidate for that.

Yes, any time you use more than one grade filter it can be considered split grade. The most common form is to use grade 0 and grade 5 to split highlights and shadow detail, but you can do other grade combinations. If you are really really having trouble with highlight detail even at grade 0, you can burn in the highlight area you want to get some detail into.

And I would also suggest you look up and use f-stop timing for printing, it makes a lot more sense than the old-school linear scale for timing and test strips. f-stop timing comes in handy with split grade printing if your high contrast filter has a different density to it and requires compensation (e.g., ilford multigrade filters grade 4-5 require 1 stop more exposure time to equal the same exposure value as grades 00-3.5)

Any print that you would need to dodge/burn to get a great result is a good candidate for split grade printing.

Flashing is good advice too for dealing with tricky highlights. There are a few different ways to do it. I found that with my D2, I need just under 1 second with no negative at f/45 to have no visual affect on the paper but get over the initial minimum exposure to start building density. Other people use some sort of dedicated flasher light source or a simple diffuser over the enlarger lens. Make some test strips to determine your enlarger/paper threshold for pre flash duration.

I like to do a test strip at c0 and then when I find my time I will do a second test where I expose it at my c0 time and then do the test sections at c4/c5 over that. Give your high contrast a second or two extra per test section because it usually needs more time for a similar amount of exposure.

Unfortunately learning film by scanning negatives can lead to lots of difficult to print negatives.

Agree with this, working with overexposed negatives vs properly exposed and developed negatives will make your highlights way more difficult to work with in printing. You'll see people on forums ask why you need to preflash and why isn't the negative exposed and developed correctly. But that's just arrogant boomer talk, as if they never had a tricky exposure. And it's not like you can undevelop it once you have the negative, so you make do. Preflashing can help when you need to eke out more detail in the highlights than just a straight grade 00 filter can give you.

Is there a reason most labs still seem to work with shitty Notritsu scanners?

It should be fairly doable to automate a setup for DLSM scanning. Slap a Fuji GFX onto it and give your customers 100MP or 400MP.

The dlsm is expensive, then usb to a computer with a python script… small machinery that automatically moves film off Aliexpress… where is the issue? Should be doable, no?

So I tried a pre flash and it seems to have recovered a decent amount of detail in the highlights. I think I'm satisfied with this negative at this point. It's inherently going to be super contrasty because of the infrared film and R72 filter, but I like that about it. Just needed to get to a point where the trees are distinguishable from the clouds.

Saving film, slowing down, stopping, and thinking just because it is film is peak community college art class bullshit. Actual film photographers, pre-digital, would blow a whole roll on taking a picture of one single dog.

The slow down/cherish frames shit results in well, /fgt/. Lots of terrible still life of mundane things that are easy to photograph if photographing takes five minutes.

I agree if youre talking about rolls of film and cameras you can carry around your neck easily. On the other hand I'm very happy if I shoot a couple 4x5s or a single 8x10 per day and work on getting a good print of it afterwards.

they really are peak. they're the perfect devices for 35mm shooting. auto everything, motor drive, set and forget and just snap away. But like i said before, over the years i've realized that for a large part of the people in this thread, shooting film is more about looking like you shoot film than anything else, hence you need a 70s SLR or you're doing it wrong.

i don't know about /fgt/ approved but i like mine. the only real problem i have with it is the price. if you can look beyond that (more money than sense type thing), then it's a nice little fun snap shooter with a decent little lens, and it can be fun to do the half frame thing. build quality is solid, and the auto mode works surprisingly well. yeah, wish it had a bit more manual control, given that the lens is already servo controlled anyway but as it is it's neat. picrel is from the camera, but i have a skill issue with rodinal and the roll it's crunchy as fuck. but for half frame the details that can be made out are still pretty good, like the chugette mural that says "never forget", and such.

You can get a starter kit for cheap off ebay, enlarger as well.

I would suggest getting an ilford pop-up darkroom tent if you don't have a bathroom you want to turn into a darkroom. It's a 4x4 tent that works perfectly fine. It's 200 bucks. I load all my film in it as well as make prints. So much nicer than a changing bag.

black and white? eh, chemistry dependent but not really huge, it's pretty idiotproof really.
Colour? yeah, probably need a thermometer and keep it close to avoid colour shifts and things like that.

Oh I misread your post. For developing You want to do your best to get your water temp right if you ever plan on printing your negatives. Consistency and control is really important if you want good negatives for printing. Scanning is significantly more forgiving. Temp influences development speed, so you should definitely try to remain consistent.

If you're making prints the temp doesn't matter too much. If you're within 10 degrees you'll be golden.

A bathroom for loading film will be convenient, but you can also buy a changing bag to load up your dev tank. Not nearly as nice as a bathroom or actual darkroom.

Last thing I'll mention. You can purchase dev tanks off ebay, but getting a new paterson tank and some omega universal film spools is pretty inexpensive. A full b&w kit with chems can be had for less than 150 bucks any day of the week.

My uni tutor-- a quite successful painter, had a large studio in new york and everything -- said that the teaching job was not really about the money anymore. The real value was having a finger on the pulse, getting a overview of what young artists were concerned with -- keeping him relevant.
