Dave Meltzer says while Vince is the greatest promoter ever, wrestling didn't really need him

Dave says wrestling was just as big, if not even bigger, in the 70s than the modern era. In his time, the average person sort of knew about wrestling although it wasn't "public". He says WrestleMania 1 was culturally huge and was the biggest success on Vince's record, and that the late 90's boom period had a lot to do with WCW paving the way for the NWO angle and the modern wrestling style. He thinks that while the Attitude Era brought in the most fans, it didn't really last long term and it couldn't have. He doesn't think wrestling in 2024 is more popular than wrestling in 1979.
