Personally if you want to talk about a great gimmick match that AEW should be back it's the "ring surrounded by video games" match. It showed a lot of potential but it just ended up being guys getting hit with cardboard boxes they pretended were arcade cabinets.
They had it set up where it looked like wrestlers could win prizes aka weapons to use by turning in tickets, but they did nothing with it. Not once did someone use a video game controller to control their opponent. And they didn't even do the spot where they pretend lose arcade buttons are thumb tacks.

It's stupid sports entertainment bullshit and a waste of time, but hardly worth getting offended over. No different than a lot of the stuff the divas use to do.
Personally for me it was the ring surrounded by videogames match where they were throwing cardboard boxes at each other and pretending they were heavy arcade machines.

You need to remember that Meltzer was trying and failing to switch over into being an MMA journalist. So he probably thought it would be bad for his brand to mark out over wrestling, or just wasn't watching as much as he use to.
You also left out the Dragon Gate six man from ROH, or as Dragon Gate fans called it at the time, an average Dragon Gate opener.
Also there are plenty of NOAH matches worth going out of your way to see before you watch a single Samoa Joe match.
