Pretty much every great era in wrestling was light on "stories", the best years of WCW maybe had 3 modern wrestling storylines going at a time. Depending on the territory you'd have a couple of angles a year to get feuds going. Most Japanese promotions have never had what would be considered a modern wrestling in storyline. Because wrestling has a built in storyline, these guys want to be champion and winning matches lead them closer to becoming a champion.
Unfortunately in AEW wrestling looks like this and it's hard to convince yourself that anyone is actually engaging in a competition.
