I've been on this board for about 6 months and realized something about this Meltzer guy.
He was very hard on guys in the past, 5 stars were pretty much rare and the match had to be extremely top tier. Whereas now, 5 stars are pretty common and the matches can be extremely above average. what happened, wrestlingBros?

Dave is an autist and doesn't understand the intangibles of a wrestling match only the moves. Also he just likes wrestling a lot more now. There were so many amazing matches in the 2000s that only got 4.75 stars max, I think he was super into MMA in the 2000s. He was a Pride FC mark iirc

Meltzer believes wrestling, in this instance just the bell to bell product, is much better on average than in yesteryear. Whether you agree or not is up to you. Let's face it we remember the highlights of the 80's, 90's, and 00's (anyone claiming 70's is an extreme oldfag or lying) but must of the time the wrestling was sub-par or cookie cutter 20 minute matches. Try and watch some early RAWs or early WCW's and compare them to average RAW/Smackdown/Dynamite matches from today.

The style has changed too. It's a lot faster paced compared to restholds taking up the majority of the match. More emphasis on high spots too since a good clip can go viral on social media.

The moves in the '80s and '90s were less complicated and the wrestlers less athletic, sure, but they wrestled better. The holds were tighter and more believable, the punches better executed, the tempo of the matches wasn't as rushed so everything had time to breathe, the crowds were hotter, wrestlers emoted more and did character work during the match. It was legitimately just better wrestling when compared to something like AEW. What is better, a simple pop-rock song executed flawlessly or an extremely complicated piece that is performed unconvincingly and with errors? Dave is the kind of autist, who thinks more notes = better music.

This is all easily disproved by watching the shows back, you're coasting off the nostalgia. Wrestling has always been clumsy and retarded stuff. The only difference between now and then is we couldn't get thousands of likes for giffing botches during the shows

Only for American wrestling. Japanese and Mexican pro-wrestling was better in the 90s and 00s. Shit it was better even in the 10s

Nope. I'm a big fan of old-school wrestling. Hell, I just watched Shawn Michaels and British Bulldog do some chain-wrestling that absolutely ethered anything the likes of Action Andretti or Komander can ever dream of doing. It was intense, actually looked like a struggle between two competitors while being athletic and smooth to boot. Wrestling like you are actually competing with the other man is a lost art in general. Almost everyone nowadays works so light and there is no visible struggling for position or selling of pain in restholds etc.

I agree with your entire post but I think this is the most important part. Modern wrestlers will do a really complicated and athletically impressive move to the outside BUT they dont even look/pretend to look to see where the guy is or act like they're thinking about what to do next. They are so obviously choreographed and make no attempt to make it look believable that its impossible to get invested in it

Lmao, what? WWE's main events with Roman are all about the babyface being dominated to garner heat from the crowd, building that up over the course of the match until the big comeback attempt and finish. It's classic wrestling with a lot of crowd involvement. AEW doesn't even have a main event scene so I don't even know what their style is.

American wrestlers could have worked faster and could have taken more dangerous moves, but they didn't. And the reason was because many of them were working 5-7 days a week and if they did more in their matches, they'd get hurt more and then they would miss bookings. And unlike today, if they missed bookings, they didn't get paid because there were no guaranteed contracts. So not getting injured was a priority. Promoters like Roy Shire also told people specifically not to do too much because then other wrestlers would have to try and do just as much or be seen as lesser wrestlers, which he didn't want.

The current wrestling style is basically due to people not being able to work. A good worker can make a punch seem deadly. A bad worker can make a canadian destroyer mean nothing. Wrestlers can't work like the old ones did, so they have to do more to get similar reactions. Kayfabe has also been broken so people aren't believing what are seeing is real, so people do more to try and convince people to react. Wrestlers are also much smaller than they used to be. This is because anyone can pay a fee and get trained, while back in the day, you would pay to get the crap kicked out of you and still end up not getting trained. It's not hard to buy that even a half-missed shot from Braun Strowman is probably knocking you out. Meanwhile, I think I could take shots from Adam Cole all day and not go down. Boxing is the same way - you won't see knockouts at minimumweight because the wrestlers are so thin, while knockouts happen often at heavyweight.

Ask Meltzer if he thinks Aaron Henare VS Shingo Takagi is a better match than Kobashi VS Misawa or Okada VS Shibata. He wouldn't be able to tell you he does with a straight face.

He lost track of his ratings, overrated a few matches and then it started snowballing. For example, on the Henare VS Takagi match. He had already given way too many other matches that WM weekend 5 stars. But then he went "Well, this was easily the best match of the week, so 5.5". He didn't say it in exactly those words, but it's pretty much what he implied his thought process was in the podcast. That's just a result of one week of overrating resulting in a pretty decent match that is supposedly in the top 30 best matches ever seen by him. His logic is full of holes like that.

If he had kept it at 5 stars as a maximum, then it'd be way more forgivable. But now it's just straight up ridiculous no matter which way you slice it. His standards have lowered.

Dave doesn't have big breaking scoops or hot gossip anymore due to everyone having podcasts and being unable to keep kayfabe, so he needs clickbait ratings to get more subs.

Dave is friends with most of the people at AEW and if he rates their matches poorly, they won't be his friends anymore and he'll lose a bunch of subscribers. Every AEW show is good, every wrestler is good and every match is good. If you don't have 9 compliments for every 1 critique, AEW fans will try to run you off various sites.

Bryan Alvarez had a famous gold boat rant a few years ago. The idea was that if TNA was popular, he'd be rich enough to buy a gold boat. I think Bryan and Dave saw that wrestling wasn't getting bigger on its own, so they started hyping up stuff to try and make it seem better than it was in order to cash in on it.

There is more wrestling, but to be honest, Dave doesn't really see anything but WWE and AEW A-shows (and rarely ever B-shows) and some of the bigger NJPW and Stardom shows. He doesn't watch anything else from Japan, he never watches stuff like Impact/MLW/NWA or various indies. He rarely ever watches Mexican shows and he has never covered Puerto Rico.
