The most convincing theory for me has always been that Vince got pissed about him getting the Slim Jim deal outside of WWF since it's well known that Vince hates it when wrestlers find success outside of the company on their own initiative since he wants to feel like he "made" them. Savage not accepting that he was "too old" and going to WCW and boosting them up was probably another sticking point.

Sort of funny given that WWE gave the 40 year old Damian Priest the MitB and is putting him up against the 41 year old Finn Balor and 37 year old Seth Rollins the other big feuds are Brock Lesnar (45) against Cody Rhodes (38) and Roman Reign (38) against the Usos (37).

They're all around the same age that Savage was (or older in Bork's case) when Vince determined that he was "too old" to be a draw.

Vince got rid of Sgt Slaughter in ‘84 because he didn’t like that Slaughter had the GI Joe deal, but he ended up bringing Slaughter back multiple times after that. I don’t think Savage’s slim deal alone would’ve kept him from coming back
