There was a groundswell of anti-WWE sentiment in the mid-to late 2000s with all the BS Vince was pulling, so it drove people to the indies. Bucks tried out for the WWE and got rejected by the size queens, so they became staunchly anti. Fastforward to that previous groundswell reaching critical mass in the 2010s with mass layoffs, rib-pushes, destryong careers, Cody leaving,TNA drying, the new IWC, and you can the perfect storm.

Social media wasn't anywhere as big as it is now in 2011. Normies weren't talking about Cena/Orton until they became memes in 2015-2016 (after Reddit/asp were established.
Wrestling forums weren't used at a level as twitter/reddit are now
