Most NJPW fans are good looking and hygenic. I've attended multiple WWE, AEW and NJPW shows and it was at the NJPW shows where I never saw obese people and the arena didn't have a rotten stench in the air.

if you look at the crowd at most shows, NJPW fans are mostly regular looking Japanese people between the ages of 30-50. So that makes sense. AEW/WWE crowds are a horrific freakshow by comparison.

This is extremely based, actually. This just shows that even NJPW wrestlers are intellectuals and are generally smarter than your average American wrestler and American wrestling fans. It also applies very strongly to a few retarded posters here who only bring down the quality of discussion in these threads. No point in fighting internet wars all day and going "Nuh uh, my opinion is better". It is low level behavior indeed. Both Shota and Tsuji seem to come across as fairly smart guys. Good for them.

Very likely. Also explains why they're really making a concerted effort now to elevate the guys below them like Sanada and Ospreay. Okada will still be around for a couple more years, and they have a good batch of young boys being elevated. I honestly kind of enjoy these dark transitional years because it's interesting to see things taking shape.

When Shingo was at Dragon Gate, they had a pet monkey in the dojo which some of the wrestlers tortured. Shingo most likely wasn't actually one of the guys that tortured it (though there is a picture of him strangling it to keep it restrained after it attacked people) but he definitely knew what was happening.

When Brock refused to come back to Japan, NJPW stripped him of the belt; he never lost it. Tana won a vacant belt by beating Albert
Where it gets wonky is that the Inoki and the IGF did not recognize the decision and continued to acknowledge Brock as champion for another year, even though he still refused to defend. THAT'S the belt they eventually convinced him to drop to Angle, who then dropped it to Nakamura in a double title match to re-unify the split belts

Shooter as he is right now is way, way more popular than Stardust Genius Naito.
Naito got zero reaction regularly until he changed gimmicks.

Shota, on the other hand, gets more fan support from fujos than almost anyone active currently (aside from maybe Naito). He's in way better shape than Narita and Tsuji and his entire gimmick is aimed at female fans.
It isn't for you, so it's no wonder you're so baffled by it.

There are a few key older matches but most of them are owned by the TV networks they aired on. This is how things are done in Japan and it fucking sucks -- it's the same reason AJPW doesn't even own all of its glory days footage and can't put any of it on their streaming thing.

If you want to watch older matches, you're going to need to know what you're looking for but you can find most of it -- if not on youtube then billibilli (chinktube)
But if you want prime Tanahashi era and beyond that, it's all on NJPW World.

Tsuji has more of a character right now but Tsuji is also like 4 years older. Tsuji needs to lose a little weight if he wants to be over with the fujos to the extent Shooter is though.

I think (I hope) Ren is going to start drifting further and further from the forced Shibata shit over the next year or two. It's obviously not really working out for him and NJPW has a pretty decent track record of adjusting things when they flop.
I'd like to see him get edgier. Shota is a G-rated face and Tsuji is way too cool for anyone to dislike so it seems like the obvious spot left open in the trio is for an asshole

Anon, it's important to understand the history of puro. Riki Choshu made a splash because he wore white boots without kneepads (but still just plain black trunks) and this was considered some sort of new breath of fresh air.

But anyway, wearing plain black trunks is kind of the NJPW signature on account of Inoki, and doubled down on by Fujinami, Shibata, etc.
If someone's character is "I respect the past of NJPW, I'm a no frills NJPW wrestler", that, to the Japanese audience, is a valid and defined character with a lot of history behind it.

This is kind of a weird revisionist history point of view in a way even though what you're saying is true. You have the advantage of hindsight.
At the time, Inoki was incredibly flamboyant because nobody had a flamboyant gimmick -- particularly in Japan, wrestling was very no-nonsense at the time. Wearing a red scarf was an extremely razzy thing to do at the time if you look at his contemporaries in the JWA.

And he doesn't need to be. He doesn't even need to be Fujinami, who had immense pressure to be Inoki's successor on him constantly, who HAD to be the next ace. There are others guys in Narita's class who can check those other boxes.

All Narita needs to be is a very good professional wrestler. Right now, he's got some kinks to iron out but to say he's a failure is, again, ridiculous hyperbole because the guy is under 30 and just at the very beginning of his career.

He wouldn't even have to change the plain black trunks, Steve Austin wore plain black trunks most of the time and he certainly stood out. But no one cared much about Austin until he developed a unique and distinctive persona, and that's what I think Ren needs.

I think this is clearly what he's angling for and even what the NJPW office has in mind for him. I think they're higher on his talent than a lot of us are, with his perfect bridging suplexes and nice touch on submission stuff.
But his strikes are lacking and he's not living up to that expectation -- yet. But he might in a few years.

What you need to understand is that Shibata was not a draw until he got brain removal surgery. He lagged massively behind Tanahashi and Nakamura, failed in mma, had a lackluster NOAH run and then was a selfish midcard guy. If you know for a fact Narita is going to have his brain take out, operated on and then put back then I guess everything will be fine.

Naito definitely needed something. His high-flying was great as the Stardust Genius but he was definitely a tier below NJPW's other best in-ring guys at the time
