He wanted to turn WWF into a sports and entertainment conglomerate. He ended up being right because Vince was basically forced to half-assedly do just that because state gaming commissions started getting up his ass so he pivoted to "Sports Entertainment."

Of course he didn't get picked first because they were hyping up his decision the entire episode to keep people interested

Hogan was a big star (bigger than Austin ever was) but he wasn't some Vince puppet. He was a self made star.
Later, Rock did the same and took AE to new heights. Austin was the only one from the 3 that was heavily related to Mcmahon.
Those 2 eventually departed from wrestling and were bigger celebrities and that's the only reason Mcmahon said Austin was the biggest star.
It's because he wants the biggest star to be remembered related to him and his company.Austin remaining with wwf was the sole reason Vince chose him.
Therefore he can say, "look the biggest star ever was alongside me and my company and far bigger than those 2 who ;eft". It's to feed his endless ego. That's all.

But he knew both Hogan and Rock were far bigger than Austin, and had Rock stayed with wwf Vince would have turned to him.
Enough with bullcrap myths about Austin when there were better wrestlers who deserved recognition.
