Punk being fired is an overall good thing for AEW. They used him for the hype of a long awaited return, he got to he champion (two short runs, though), and he got to give MJF a great rub that cemented him as a true top guy, Starks a rub to lead Collison, and Darby a rub that’s set him up for future success.

Realistically, what more could they have gotten from punk? Another title run? NWO tribute faction? 4th show?
