Tony spent the entirety of AEWs existence catering to the shit remnant of "fans" (smarks) that are left watching this "sport", instead of catering to a casual audience. This left him with a very low ceiling that he was occasionally able to almost reach by pulling out all of the stops years ago, but now that WWE isn't as dogshit anymore that pool of smarks is now split between AEW & WWE, leaving AEW with constant dogshit nomilly ratings. At least with WWE there is a loyal group of casuals (shitskins, etc) that will consistently watch to keep their ratings somewhat respectable. Russo pretty much hit the nail on the head with his recent rant about how Meltzer destroyed the business and Tony's obsession with pleasing Meltzer backs up that theory.

It's kind of funny, because Tony is supposedly a student of the game. But here he is making many of the exact same mistakes TNA made. TNA was on fire at one point, but they just had to keep signing any ex WWE guy and pushing them to the moon. It became a joke on the internet, and the exact same thing is happening here. Despite everything Tony said, AEW became WWE lite. That's why a lot of people are abandoning it I would imagine. We've seen all this before, we know where it leads.

Tony is not good as a booker or a promoter no matter how many meme awards people want to give him. Those things just went to his head and made him think he was some savant at all of them. People supported him, because they unironically hated WWE and wanted another company. Those that continue to support him despite all his obvious failings are obsessed with that idea and don't want "good wrestling" they simply want to be a part of something that is not WWE, like it's some holy war. Tony has no redeeming value outside of being someone who has access to a lot of money. He has absolutely zero business sense or savvy.
