I finally understand why Chono criticized Meij 5 years ago. Chono knows from experience that foreigners are destined to leave, so pushing them hard at the expense of the Japanese like Meij did would bite them in the ass sooner or later. Meij basically gave birth to AEW.

NJPW needs to end this partnership with AEW and refocus on the Japanese market.

With the signing of Ospreay, Tony has effectively hired nearly half of New Japan's main event scene for the past 4 years. Add to this the fact that the main belt for their US expansion is about to be absorbed in to a Triple Crown-like belt for which 2 thirds of the belts are under the ownership of AEW and I assume they are effectively lose the ability to determine what happens with this belt.

This is on top of the multiple cross promotional PPVs that have happened between the two over the past few years where AEW has made NJPW it's bitch. Its funny that since the very first Forbidden Door only one talent in the three PPVs (not counting pre-show matches) has won a direct AEW vs NJPW match on these shows that has not yet gone on to sign with the company, and it was fucking Sanada as their fucking champion.

This partnership is doing absolutely nothing for NJPW, Harold Meij was right

I remember these comments and it was mainly just Chono using the gaijin to criticize the lack of young Japanese talent he saw on the roster at that time. Him saying the company relied on gaijin too much was not meant to criticize them, but to highlight the lack of talent they had coming up at the time. For a while, there weren't a lot of exciting Japanese wrestler debuts after Okada.

They think NJPW should make moves that solely benefit the fans (western fans in particular) and should just pass up those million dollar gates AEW is getting them twice a year.

Bushiroad is an extremely cheap fucking company. This we've known for a long time now but it was punctuated by the Aussie Open thing, them being tag champs while not even under contract, and then NJPW refusing to pay them, so they went to AEW.
You really think they're going to pass up million dollar gates because their fans might be miffed about losing Ospreay? Hell, they probably got some more money out of Tony in the Jay/Ospreay deals with their licensing agreement (letting Jay use BC).
You don't have to LIKE what they're doing but it's not difficult to understand the why of it.

This has always been the case. They didn't keep Hogan, they didn't keep Scott Norton, they only had Vader a few times and Stan Hansen only worked a few shows before going back to AJPW.

For some reason, there's this fantasy by retards like this Super Jabroni Cast moron that NJPW will keep an ascendant star like Kenny or Ospreay forever when the reality is, guys giving their entire careers to Japan is so rare it's basically an aberration. He hasn't beaten Naito or Sanada, the most over guy and the champ respectively, both with the biggest build leading to WK. Naito even eliminated Will in the G1. He beat Okada but in a G1 block match, a minor win in a small venue and Naito beating Okada in the G1 finals helps cover it even more. Hell, Yota humiliated Will on G1 finals day which led to a match. Yota and Shota are still pretty fresh and have spent the year being built up and they both pushed Will to his limits, especially Shota in a performance that put the spotlight on him. Who else, Finlay? Whatever, Tama beat him in worse fashion afterwards. Shingo and Zack in England? Alright but Shingo wasn't even an NJPW event.

The only thing that stands out is it felt like Shota maybe should have won at Power Struggle but even that would've have been a huge upset and Shota didn't have a lot of shine on him going into that match after the G1 and the endless multi-mans with Ren that ended in a draw.
