Relying only on attendance and merchandise like you're an American wrestling territory in the 70s does not work anymore and the entire Japanese business in beholden to this model of business.
The American companies are generating hundreds (thousands in WWE's case) of times the revenue of Japanese wrestling companies thanks to the big TV contracts. Japanese wrestling simply can't compete financially anymore.
Even if WWE can't draw flies to shit in Japan, they have billions of dollars to burn on a long-term investment strategy in Japan.
I genuinely think Japanese wrestling has to find a new way to make money.
