Andre did NOT pass the torch to Hogan. Hogan was the biggest star in the wrestling world by 1985. Andre v Hogan was a dream match, but Hogan had already been "the guy" for a few years before their iconic encounter.

Hogan passed the torch to Ultimate Warrior in 1990. But his run was a failure so Vince had Hogan win it back.

Hogan shouldn't have been involved with the WrestleMania IX ending, but the point was to get the title on a heel, who would beat Hogan, and then have that heel in turn lose to the next top guy. This was a common strategy in the 80s btw. Bob Backlund didn't drop the title to Hogan, but he dropped it to Iron Sheik who Hogan then defeated.

Bret Hart passed the torch to Austin at WrestleMania 13. Shawn was nowhere near the top guy in the company in April of 1998.

Hunter never had the torch in his entire career. He has never been "the guy." Triple H is the original B+ player.

Steve Austin passed the torch to the Rock at WrestleMania 19.

The Rock then passed the torch to Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam 2002. But Lesnar ended up leaving a few years later. This meant the torch was essentially dropped and doused. John Cena eventually picked it up, and WWE would later pretend the Rock passed Cena the torch years later after Cena had already been the top guy. That was just for marketing their feud though.

The correct timeline.

The "torch" refers to the top guy, i.e. the 'face of the promotion', or in Japan, the 'ace.' It does not refer to who holds the world championship, but the two are often aligned because the top guy is often the world champ too.

Brock Lesnar was the chosen one, not John Cena. Lesnar leaving WWE back then was considered a huge deal (although it was known he would be leaving before he left).

and to add, Jericho getting the undisputed belt was an adjustment over the latter half of 2001. Originally the 2 Man Power Trip storyline was going to have Hunter go over Austin, but Hunter's quad got KWABbed. Instead the invasion stuff got rushed in and Jericho ended up as a heel undisputed champ for Hunter to go over when he returned.

What the fuck is this headcanon? 'Passing the torch' doesn't mean what you think it does. Bret left for a few months and came back as the highest paid wrestler in still thinking he was literally better than everyone else in the company despite not drawing a dime and almost bankrupting the WWF in '97. He didn't pass shit. He didn't have the torch to begin with. Hogan was right to not put him over because he sucked!

None of the 90s guys really passed the torch properly. They all fucked off after the Monday Night Wars ended. Bret, Austin, Rock, Hogan, Goldberg, Savage, Nash, Hall, Sting all basically retired by 2003. That was partly due to Vince being retarded and also just those guys wanting to retire. The torch kind of got passed to Lesnar but then he took it home with him and they had to start from scratch again in 2004 anyway

Austin had no choice to retire so Rock is probably the worst offender. He was still really young and hardly showed up after 2001 before finally leaving in 2003. Quite a fag really

I literally read a quote from Austin stating he wanted Jericho to beat him clean at Vengeance and put him over hard. It was Vince's decision and other politics that lead to what we got. Jericho was the intended person that Austin and Rock were going to pass the torch too
