Not every wrestling match needs to have a story behind it. One should be able to watch a match between two guys they've never heard of before and enjoy it. The same way you can watch a good UFC fight between two undercard guys you've never seen before or a random football match with two clubs you've never heard of. A good match is one that can suspend your disbelief and hold your attention despite the fact that you know it's a work.

That said, characters and stories still matter. When it comes to drawing money the characters and stories are more important. But the point of those characters and stories is to get you interested in the match. The purpose of each element is to get you interested in the other elements. I think that's why WWE is so hot right now. They're giving us all three of those things at a high level.

The match is meant to tell a story, the big problem right now is that too many wrestlers are working a paint by numbers style, inserting spots and moves into a template that doesn't make any sense.

Is there any other fandom that is so in denial about being fans as wrestling fans are?

They're fans of wrestling but they hate wrestling. They hate the idea of it. The match doesn't matter, only the lowest-tier, worst-acted soap operas imaginable have their appeal, and which guy is champion when company make the "big good money!"
They say they care about stories but I guarantee you none of them care about why Austin/Rock were feuding for Wrestlemania X7, and more than half of them don't even know why it happened, that it was built around some TERRIBLE story about Austin being jealous of Rock being managed by Debra of all things.

The story was the real-life aspect that the crowd turned Hogan face and they both adapted to the live wrestling format on the biggest possible stage and spun themselves on a dime to accomodate the fans
It's unironically probably the best singular example of in-ring storytelling because two guys went in with an idea of what they were gonna do and completely 180'd it as necessity demanded

I'm never ever thinking of this. But if a match ends suddenly or abruptly, and it feels like the story didn't fully play out, then yeah, it will feel like the match was too short. It's a feel thing though and is entirely dependent on my reaction to the story happening in the match.

I don't know anyone who watches wrestling the way you're talking about. Even autistic king jew Meltzer doesn't spreadsheet out 'how many moves per minute' lol

AEW definitely has a problem where guys can't help but do every idea they have. For instance, and this has happened in other similar situation. When Adam Cole had his first match back they did a spot where his injured leg was being worked over and he made a big babyface comeback and won.
Doesn't that make more sense to do that in a match that has actual build? Cause you've just shown everyone he's 100% recovered from his injury, and no one even cared in the moment cause it was a throw away match.
I was a huge indie fan 20 years ago, and I really want AEW to be better, but I guess all the haters were right, and that style only degenerated.

Hardcore matches in ECW still had some logic which is completely missing in a lot of AEW matches, i said they tend to have no logic but it doesn't mean they didn't have any in ECW, they have zero logic in most modern hardcore bouts and generally in indieshit promotions that focus on that
