Several factors, the big one is lack of experience. To use Gayman as an example, Adam Page has been wrestling for a decade and a half, and he's had less than 600 matches. In the last 4 months, despite allegedly being a big star in the second biggest promotion has wrestled 7 matches. In the territory days, barring some horrific injury, you could clear 200 matches a year easy. And now WWE and New Japan are really the only places to get experience and work with people who know more than you do, and by the time you're there, unless you're just a body guy, you've probably developed a lot of bad habits.
It's also really hard to build a name for yourself on the indies without being bad wrestler. You're not going to get any internet buzz unless you set the record for most canadian destroyers in a match or no sell a powerbomb off a ladder to the floor. You're not getting booked in the indies people actually watch, because you have a good character and know how to sell, it's going to because you found a new way to do a flip while slapping your thigh.
