This absolutely did not happen. The brain is attached to the spinal column via the brain stem. Attempting to bend it or sever it results in instant death. You can't remove a brain during surgery as anyone who did high school anatomy will tell you.

I know it's not funny, but this was a case of a poor translation of Japanese to English from his source. Japanese is much less explicit than English in conveying information leading to a lot of difficulty in translations.
