How Many Belts Does A Fed Really Need?

I think most people would agree at this point that WWE has too many belts. Not trying to pick on them, though, because other feds have also made the same mistake. So realistically, how many should there be?
This is what I think
>1 World title for the men
>1 World title for the women
>1 Midcard title for the men
>1 Midcard title for the women
>1 World Tag title for the men
>1 World Tag title for the women
>1 or 2 "gimmick belts" that are specific to certain types of wrestlers or matches. Examples would include cruiserweight, hardcore, 6-Man tag, 24/7, and TV titles.
I think that's all you need, but I'm curious to hear what others think. So, how many belts do you think a fed really needs?

unfortunately, it is necessary today. However, what I'm suggesting is to just give them 3 basic titles instead of the clusterfuck they're doing now.

Honestly, it depends on how much tv time they have weekly. NWA has like 12 belts, were talking about adding another one and they barely has 2 hours of weekly content. Thats too much. Mesnwhile, NJPW also has a lot of belts, but they do produce a lot of shows per weeks + they have a US branch and they started an Australian one so I guess it balances out.

that's a very good point, especially in regards to the current NWA. Let's assume that we're talking about a reasonably popular fed with two weekly TV shows, meaning somewhere between 2 and 6 hours of TV time per werk.

well this is just my opinion, but I think it's better to have only one top title. It seems to me that it's better to have one world title that actually means something instead of two titles that really don't.

Depends on how many talents and the purpose of the belts. New Japan used to had an organized structure before they unified HeabyQ and IC

You need one title for the main event scene. This is the belt the face of the company holds.

You need one title for future main eventers to trial with. This was what the Intercontinental belt was when there were only two in the whole promotion. It preps wrestlers for the crowd to be taken seriously as contenders for the main belt.

You need one belt for the secondary main event scene, the upper midcard: the midcard belt proper. The IC belt is the gate, this belt is to be the lounge. It's the second most important belt and the stepping stone to or from the main title, or else just a good enough belt for wrestlers who should never be given the main belt but still deserve a push. This was the World Heavyweight Championship.

You need a tag team title. It breaks up the monotony of singles matches and allows stables to be more of a thing. It doesn't need to be limited to two members, but for trios and more it should all happen on this one belt---it's *the* tag team title, no matter how many members are involved at a time.

And that's all you *need*---BUT, you can use *two* more belts.

There's a title you can use for sunsetting talent who are either on their way out or cannot perform at the same frequency or ability. You can give this to Legends to magnify how big a deal they are without overshadowing younger guys as a casualty. The prestige would come from being passed along from legend to legend. I don't know of a belt that's fit this bill.

And lastly, a belt for cross-promotional matches that can be passed around partner feds. It allows for matches from rival companies' talent. That's what the All-Atlantic belt is supposed to be.

That's it. All together, that's 6 title belts for a promotion of any size. It's very well-rounded and allows everyone a chance to shine except jobbers. You could have a title specifically for jobbers, but you could also put them in the last belt's scene.

Lmao there was a jobber title called King of Dark Champion of where the loser got the champion and they have to wrestler exclusively on dark match

TNA tried this. The problem you run into is its difficult to quantify what makes a wrestler a legend

No, the world title is to be the main title and taken all across the world while the national title is exclusively defended in America and even defended in house shows to give a reason for new people to attend

You should only have 1 World title and 1 tag title, no womeme wrestling at all and no mid card belts. Mid card belts are for shitters and if wrestling was a shoot nobody would fight for them. Every wrestler in your promotion should be fighting for the same thing, in modern wrestling the champion feuds with 1 person and everybody else forgets about the world title.

personally, i think it's criminal that WWE isn't using the original world heavyweight championship as its main title. When Vince bought WCW, they bought a world title belt that was originally the NWA world title. Through that connection, the big gold belt has a lineage that can be traced back all the way to Hackenschmmidt and the original world wrestling title. Yes it originated outside the company but who cares? The only other organization that can claim that link to the beginning would be the NWA, and we can already see that it's going nowhere. For them, it would make sense to have the original world's heavyweight championship as the top prize, especially since they already unified it with the WWF/E title anyway.

but the meaning of each staple belt should always be the main and sole attribute---and you can argue further that the meaning should be *implicit*, too

The "IC" title doesn't announce itself as the belt up & comers run with to see if they're good enough for the big time belt; it has a name which is divorced from its purpose but still sounds kind of prestigious; that's probably what you want for all their names, even the "tag team" titles, which you gotta admit sounds lame/lackluster; these bullshit territory titles have grander sounding names, usually (United States Championship is super lame and still means jackshit)

all told, it's best to leave gimmicked championship matches to gimmicked titles, and let the real titles with longevity be pure; you can have a jobber title with zero official stipulations and just let it implicitly be exclusively defended by lower mid-card and undercard contenders. That gives it more weight and has a better chance of making the wrestlers happier and the crowd more invested.

The absolute simplest qualification is being a hall of famer.
Aside from that, it'd be someone who was mega over during their tenure with any of the most important belts---and the more they held, the better. It also would be for guys who'd spent at least two decades in the fed or had at least three decades worth of a career in total.

It's really not as tricky as you'd imagine to define a legend for the championship.

You ignore what everyone is saying about stepping stones. There is also the fact that these other titles create immediate spotlights upon non-main event talent that can only be achieved otherwise with god tier creative booking that makes people invested in matches with nothing on the line at stake.

Imagine trying to make a PPV card that will draw massive buys with only one inherently meaningful match to build with? Minimalism in a vacuum sounds good in your head, but it's asinine for business both for your workers and your audience. Everyone *should* be gunning for the top spot, but without lesser belts they have no way to prove they deserve the real one.

that original world title was actually a cross-promotional title as well, and that's where the problem eventually occurred. Before long, you had multiple people claiming to be the world champion and so they started the NWA to put a lid on that and maintain the integrity of that championship. Of course, after Crockett the NWA went to shit and never recovered, but that shouldn't matter because neither WCW nor the NWA created the original world title.

Belts aren't "stepping stones", that's pure mark headcanon. Belts are a storytelling device and it's devalued when you have a similar but lesser title on the same show. The only stepping stone is getting over, if you can't get over without fighting for a midcard belt then you're not worth tv time. The tag team division is a better way to develop young talent too and since you don't have other shitter belts the tag team division is way more important.
