I believe like good albums and movies some video games also had that magic of a team that worked together in perfect synchronicity.
HCTP has that "IT factor" to it. The wrestlers moves and animations, the music, the graphics style, the stories, the sound effects.... It all blended together perfectly. It had soul.
The n64 AKI games were also quite well put together.

This. Its a fucking travesty its not been done ever since. Some of the best RNG and random stuff can happen and stays interesting all through the season. Why are they so shit now? These games where pure kino and they fucking ruined them for the schlock we get now with 2K, its sickening.

The story mode was based af. Smackdown season had more options but DoRs storymodes were one long coherent story for your CAW. It is like the difference between Skyrim dungeons and Zelda dungeons.

And nothing to do but exchibition matches was honestly fine because the gameplay was so fucking good. Especially if you had friends to play with. You could get really creative in the matches and don't stuff you couldn't do in the PS2 games like combineing weapons. Also the gameplay felt much smoother because you could break up moves during animations. I haven't played DoR 2 in about 14 years desu so there is probably some other stuff that gave me memories of it being incredibly based.

Also debating about what is better between DoR vs Smackdown is pure 2000s IGN forums kino. Honestly though wrestling games from both PS2 and Gamecube were based around and that time and provided different experiences, both of which are much better to the dross they serve up now with the 2K games.

I particularly liked how every move had at least 3-4 variations, and barely any that had a pin incorporated

That always worked me into a shoot with the later games -- finisher with a pin included, so it can't be used outside the ring or no pinfall matches so it's replaced with some entirely different move

Yeah the 2K games have really shallow gameplay and shitty non-impactful animations. 2K22 at least doesn't have the slow ass animations that the previous ones did, but some of the animations just look like they took the old ones and just sped them up. I usually pirate them to fuck around with creating shit but then when it comes time to play matches I get bored quick. HCTP actually had great home made animations that looked awesome, instead of the shitty lazy motion capture shit of 2K. Also in HCTP you could actually suqash people pretty quick if you knew what you were doing or was playing as a top guy vs jobber. Meanwhile 2K games seem to want to give everyone a chance or some gay shit.

The reversal system is better, the grappling system is the same only you get four different grapple with four different moves for more diverse movesets which is better, better graphics, opponents actually sell moves, season mode is better but that's subjective, introduction of weight classes so someone like Rey Mysterio can't pick up the Big Show, more match types like Elimination Chamber and it was the first game with legends even though there was only like eight of them. HCTP was objectively better.

Reversal system just changed the button mapping.
Grappling system is slower
Graphics aren't really better
Same selling because HCTP the made in a year while SYM was made in 2 so they had to reuse assets
Season mode in SYM is better
Realism in games fucking sucks so weight class system fucking sucks.
Legends with no actual entrances or music so what's the fucking point.

SYM is objectively better.

I think WWE2K19 beats HCTP. It's a direct evolution of that engine.
However, the N64 games are a different breed. There's a good mix of arcade style action and varying levels of realism depending on which title it is. I like how the sounds and the animations of the wrestlers give them a real weight.
