My headcanon to justify the direction of his character and his actions is that when he faced KO with the chair, it reminded him of his old self, when he was ultimate NXT babyface Sami who did the right thing, before KO's and everyone else's constant betrayal made him into to the sniveling paranoid loser. Seeing how he still loved KO despite all the pain he caused him turned the switch.
