MJF like Preston Vance, was a Cody guy who Cody wanted pushed hard. But while Preston was stuck as bitch boy for Dark Order and forced to wear a gimp mask to hide his face, MJF was pretty much deemed too much of an up and coming star to be buried as badly as Preston was. Which pissed Kenny and Hangman off big time, as they had the idea, once they got the world title, that it would never leave either man's hand.
So MJF got stuck working with Chris Jericho so Chris could vampirize him. But Jericho could never fully kill MJF's heat and once Punk came along and got Tony to make Hangman job the belt to Punk, the plan was to have MJF finally get it.
It's also one of the main reasons why the trios belt happened; it basically existed to keep Kenny sated when it was told to him he'd never be allowed near the world title anytime soon since the plan was to pull the trigger on MJF as the top guy.
