“That still doesn’t explain why you called me specifically to deal with this.” you argued.
A flash of annoyance swept across Tombstone’s face for a moment, but he quickly schooled his expression. “That’s simple. It’s because you’re a pest. A thorn in the side of any respectable crime boss with proper roots dug into this city. A free agent with no allegiances and no orders to follow.” he said. “But above all, it’s because you’re a selfish bastard. And like many others before you, I think you’d jump at the chance to get me out of the picture so that you could capitalize on my absence.”
“...I guess that’s fair.” you admitted, not feeling the need to engage the gangster in criminal politics. “Why don’t I just try and steal the cure for your daughter. He has to have it somewhere.”
The big albino gave you a thoughtful look and shifted his stance slightly. “That’s probably easier said than done. You have no way of knowing what the antidote looks like or where they might be keeping it, and that would require far too much work on either of our part to pull off.” he said. “But…if you’re feeling particularly foolhardy, then you are welcome to try. Just don’t bring him knocking on my doorstep when you do fail.”
You tried, and failed, not to scowl at that.
“Have you tried letting someone else look at her? There are some pretty smart people on the other side of the fence.” you suggested.
Tombstone sighed slightly. “I know. And I have considered it, but there’s too big of a chance that they might imprison her for her connections to my operations. And without my resources to aid either of us, she won’t be shown any favor or mercy in the courtroom.” he explained. “However…if this goes on any longer, then I might be forced to take such a course of action. Her life is more important than her future.”
You nodded, understanding a bit of what he was saying. “I’ve kind of got a lot on my plate right now. I might know some friends who’d love to shut down your operations, though.”
Tombstone raised an eyebrow at that. Then, he nodded.
“That might be a more favorable solution for both of us. By dividing up the work, we can cripple the Goblin’s forces quickly, and without incriminating either of us.” he concluded.
“If this does succeed, we can discuss payment at a later date.” he continued. “And furthermore, if you happen to come across anything that looks particularly valuable while you’re attacking my men, you’re welcome to keep it.”
Now there was a nice thought! It almost made you want to do it all by yourself. Almost.
Tombstone reached into his jacket pocket, and you jerked back reflexively. Noticing this, he proceeded to pull something out, slowly and carefully, never taking his eyes away from yours. What he pulled out was a black, rectangular device that looked vaguely familiar.
