In this case though, whether it is specifically algae or something else with photosynthetic properties, isn't certain or important. What matters is that in the presence of sunlight, as long as you're hydrated, your body can naturally produce some basic sustenance. You're still a victim of troll hunger and still need to eat, but you will at least not starve to death (thus continue to regenerate) as long as you get some sun and water.
Incidentally, this may well explain your green skin!
