Richard nodded again. “Like I said. It wasn’t pretty.” he promised, suppressing a shudder of his own. “After that, I expected us to continue the project like normal. But…to our surprise, I learned that the focus of the project had suddenly shifted from developing a clean source of energy, to developing ‘genetically engineered spiders’.”
“They wanted to try and reproduce the effects of the spider-bite.” you concluded.
Richard didn’t nod this time, but he didn’t have to. Judging by his furious expression, you were right on the money.
“Most of us left the project after that, but me and a few others stuck with it, hoping that our research might still be used to help people. And so…I helped them develop their first line of genetically engineered spiders. Some poor, naïve part of me hoped that these creatures could be used to make advances in the medical or bio-engineering fields.” he admitted, letting his shoulders sag slightly. “But after I discovered their plans to use human test subjects as a part of some big, military contract, I couldn’t keep lying to myself. I left the project, and never looked back. I guess some part of me had hoped that they’d abandon it too, once they realized how impossible it was.”
“Not impossible enough, apparently.” you commented.
Richard looked up at you sharply, his gaze unwavering as he took another long look at you.
“Who told you about all this?” Richard said, his voice a low rumble in the quiet hospital room. “Did someone hire you? Was it Oscorp, or one of their competitors? You need to tell me.”
The sudden shift in your brother’s mood momentarily threw you off guard. You haven’t seen him this serious since…well, never! Whatever he’d seen in that lab must’ve spooked him real good.
You brother must have mistaken your stunned silence for stubbornness, because he kept pleading.
“Please, Ben. This isn’t one of your ‘gigs’ or jobs. Lives could be at risk.” he insisted. “...Have you been exposed?”
It doesn’t sound like he’ll give you anything more unless you offer some information in return.
What will you say?
