You swam desperately after your torch fish, it was your only friend here, your only chance of survival, you were cold, ragged and so, SO tired, you wanted to close your eyes, to surrender to sleep and the sea but something pushed you on through the abyss. More than once you your vision dimmed to the muted blurs but somehow you managed to linger on in the waking world, your fish friend returned to nibble on you each time and it somehow gave you strength.
Eventually a jagged wall of rock and coral greeted you out of the abyss, it coral a dull comparison to the grotto but anything was better than the endless abyss behind you.
You swam, scrambled and rolled up the cliffface, abyssal darkness replaced by tenuous dim light and bleached white coral of a unhealthy complexion, you scrambled and prayed as you felt yourself gashed and wounded a dozen times as you climbed, finally you reached for rock and found open water.
You had made it out of that hellish pit.
With leaden arms and throbbing mind you pulled yourself upwards onto the reef, it was as if you were pulling yourself out of a bog but its release felt as sweet as that girls kiss.
You felt ragged, exhausted, desperate for air that was still so far from sight but at least you were no longer in lightless darkness, you did not know how long you had been underwater, it felt like days.
Before you was a boneyard of bones and broken ships, it might have been ghoulish if not for the ecstasy of relief.
