Callisto did exactly what you expected her to. She took advantage of the massive opening you left for her, slipped underneath your arms, and came back up behind you.

“I don’t think so, buddy. You wanna get handsy? You save it for combat training. Which is something you’ve been flaking out on.” she said, flashing a confident grin in your direction while backtracking.

“I’ll find some time to drop by later.” you promised, arms still open as you turned to face her. “When was the last time you had one of these?”

You beckoned for her to come closer with both hands. Callisto shook her head slowly, her single eye fixed upon you as you circled one another. From the look on her face, you could tell that she was having fun.

“I dunno. A while, probably. The open road and the sewers aren’t exactly the best places to receive warm hugs.” she said with a shrug.

“Well you’ve been missing out. I’ll have you know that I give great hugs.”

“I’ll take your word for it, then.”

“Come on, bring it in.”

You took a step forward, but Callisto didn’t retreat this time.

“I’m warning you, Huntsman. I can’t be held accountable for what happens to you if you invade my personal space.” she warned, her smile caught somewhere between ‘teasing’ and ‘predatory’.

Before you could respond, the familiar sound of Iara breaking the sound barrier drew Callisto’s attention upwards and away from you.

What will you do?

Callisto shrugged.

“No clue. You’d be better off asking Nature Girl about that. Frankly, I’m surprised he was even able to grow so fucking big in such a short amount of time.”

“You haven’t talked to her ever since she left The Alley?” you asked.

“Nope. Believe it or not, me and her don’t really get along all that well. She was more than happy to leave as soon as the opportunity presented itself. The only reason I’m keeping an eye on her is because the X-Men kicked her sorry ass to the curb.”

“Did they ask you to do that?”

“In an…indirect sort of way, yeah. They more or less sent out a warning, and said that they might need my help to reign her in.” Callisto explained. “She’s young, dumb and impressionable. But even worse than all that, she’s powerful. The next time she runs off, it might lead her straight into the Brotherhood’s arms, or into a prison cell, or maybe even into an early grave.”

You remembered the time when Callisto nearly blew up at Nature Girl for entertaining the thought of joining up with the Green Goblin. If it wasn’t for the fact that Glass was looking after her, you might’ve been actually worried about the possibility of that happening for real.

Callisto must have sensed that you were thinking the same thing, because she let the matter drop and refocused her efforts on wrangling the plant-thing. He almost seemed to enjoy squirming in her arms like that.

“Are you gonna give it a name? Donny can’t be the only plant mutant with a name.” you said.

“Oh, you know what they say about naming strays.” she replied, finally managing to restrain each of its limbs. “If you give them a name, it’ll be harder to let them go later. And I’m not really in the market for a baby swamp monster.”

“But you take in strays all the time. It’s kind of your thing. You’re like the Mutant Mother Teresa.” you argued.

Callisto tilted her head to the side a bit, almost as if to say that you technically weren’t wrong, even if she didn’t seem too fond of the comparison.

“Huntsman, I don’t know anything about this thing. And thanks to your unhelpful explanation, I’m starting to believe that you don’t know a whole lot about it either.” she said.

You mimicked her gesture from earlier.

“Yeah, but he’s so friendly…”

“Yeah, I can tell.” Callisto grunted, having let a vine-like tendril slip while she wasn’t paying attention. “But what if he’s some sort of super weapon? What happens if I let him get wet, or if I feed him after midnight? Can you seriously guarantee that he won’t wake up one morning and decide to eat us all?”

You gave Ana a surprised look. She didn’t seem the type to care about whether people liked her or not, so you wondered why she would be interested. And then, you put the pieces together.

“If I am to accompany you to your city, I imagine that I would need to find a way to keep myself occupied. A way to challenge myself. I’ve heard of this ‘Silver Sable’ and the exploits of her hunting party. I would be interested in meeting her.”

“Of course! I can set up a meeting when we get back.”

You felt a bit of excitement creeping into your voice. If Ana was actually considering staying in New York for a while, then that meant spending more time with her during your downtime. And your career offered a LOT of downtime.

The two of you grinned at each other, and you spotted Iara giving you a thumbs up over Ana’s shoulder. It quickly became a much more obscene gesture, but a half-hearted elbow from Glass forced her to cut it out before Ana noticed.

You rolled your eyes at her, but you were still smiling under your mask.

“Hey, guys? Has Callisto ever called me her friend when I’m not around? If so, please let me know so I can tease her about it when we get back.”

“She doesn’t say it outright, but you should see how excited she gets when she smells you coming.”

Glass gave her a doubtful look.

“I always see her checking her inventory of knives and throwing stars.”

Iara rolled her eyes.

“And she fixes her hair, checks her clothes and makes sure that she smells nice, despite living in a sewer. And I’ve caught her brushing up on her gaming skills when she thinks no one’s looking. You should challenge her next time you see her.”

“Bi-weekly game nights don’t sound like a bad idea. I’ll run it past her next time I see her. It’ll be sweet payback for having her thrash me during our training sessions.”

The four of you casually chatted like this on the way back to the Mirage Hotel, all thoughts of Demons and evil casino owners left behind as you went. The more you walked, the less your acid burns bothered you. Your uniform hadn’t even been damaged during that fight. Not a single rip or tear in sight. This Kree tech really was something else.

When you got back, the Morlocks were rushed into another room where W would be attended to by a medical professional. The other members of your team came to meet you and Elsa shortly afterward, followed by Gloria and her personal assistant, Koa.

She looked incredibly pleased with herself, and you had a pretty good idea of why.

“I could kiss you all right now. You actually managed to run Degli out of town! His business is in shambles, and his supporters are scattered to the wind. We’re still picking up the pieces and I’m sure we’ll discuss how we’re going to divide up the territory later, but this is a big win for us.”

You didn’t think you could slip past this gate without damaging it, which would alert the Silvertongue to your presence. And you really didn’t like the idea of delving into the lair of an evil monster without any backup. It could be a trap.

After a minute or two, you thought it best to pull out for the time being. But not before taking a few pics of the gate with your AR goggles.

Once you were outside, you sent a quick report to Terminal to let him know that you had pulled out in order to observe the situation from afar. Hopefully, the woman from before will come out the same way that she entered.

While you waited, you decided to give Callisto a call. She might know something about the history of those tunnels, and what might be down there.

It took a few tries before he finally picked up, and you were forced to remember that she probably had to walk about a mile or two just to answer it. But when she answered it, she didn’t sound agitated by the prospect of getting a little extra exercise.

“Yeah?”

“Hey, Callie. Got a minute?” you asked.

“I might. What do you need?”

“I found some abandoned subway tunnels over by Morningside Park. There was this weird illusory wall that I slipped through, and it led me towards a flight of stairs. From there, I ran into this freaky serpent gate. Know anything about it?”

Callisto made a thoughtful noise. “There shouldn’t be anything down there. Those tunnels flooded a while back, and they haven’t been used since.” she explained. “If there’s someone or something hiding in those tunnels, then they must really not want to be found.”

“Do you think you could look into it for me?” you asked.

“I’ll see if I can get the Deep One to give it a look. She’s been itching for some action.” Callisto said.

“Don’t I know it.” you sighed. “Thanks. Let me know if she finds anything.”

“Will do. Try not to do anything stupid.”

You laughed. “Hi. Have we met?”

And just like that, she hung up on you, and you were left with nothing but your own thoughts for company. Terminal would bug you every now and again, deprived of human interaction as he was, and you humored him to the best of your ability.

After a few hours of this, however, you were rescued from the monotony of small-talk by the sound of Julia’s voice.

“Hey hey. How goes the stakeout?” asked a pink wizard hat icon in the top right corner of your HUD. “I see you’ve taken some pics. What’s this all about?”

“Some weird snake gate was separating me from the target after she fled underground. I was gonna show it to the others to see if there was anything distinctly magical about it.” you said.

“I’ll pass it along. Hope you don’t mind if I do some research of my own. Haven’t had much to do lately.”

“Knock yourself out.”

The girl’s eyes widened slightly. She seemed genuinely surprised that you were talking to her at all. Her mouth began moving, as if to sound the words out before she spoke.

“E-Ethel.” she said in a frail voice. “My name’s...Ethel.”

“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Ethel.” you said in an encouraging tone. “Do you think you can take care of these until the greenhouse gets set up?”

The girl nodded eagerly with a tight lipped smile.

“I’m…good at making things grow.” she promised. “It’s…it’s how I got so big.”

You weren’t sure of the specifics of her mutant ability, but you were beginning to understand why Callisto had chosen her to watch over the flowers.

With a bit of careful planning, Ethel here could speed up the growth and productivity of the flower garden. The same might apply to their food supply as well.

“Well that puts me at ease. Thanks for stepping up, Ethel.” you said, extending a fist towards her.

She glanced at it, and then back at you. Carefully, and ever so slowly, she brought her other hand up, curled it into a fist and lightly tapped her knuckles against your own. The action caused you to swing back and forth a bit, but the girl seemed amused by the whole thing.

“Take care.” you said, lowering yourself back down to the ground.

When you glanced over to Callisto, you were lucky enough to catch a genuine smirk playing across her features. Suddenly, the murmurs and mutterings of the Morlocks surrounding you sounded a little less hostile, and a little less suspicious. You had the vague impression that the girl you just talked to was beloved by many a Morlock around these parts.

For your own sake, it would probably be prudent to avoid upsetting or hurting her.

The Morlock leader gave you an approving nod and gestured for you to follow. Many pairs of eyes followed you as you went, but some stayed fixated on Ethel as she excitedly gushed over her new magic flowers.

When Callisto was certain that the two of you were out of earshot, she fixed you with a frank look.

“Look,” she began. “I appreciate what you’re doing down here. I’m not ungrateful enough to turn away free help. God knows some of these people could use it.” she said, glancing back at them. “But a good number of them still don’t trust you. They’re not entirely comfortable with a topsider coming down here and dictating how they should live. They think that it strips them of their ‘independence’ and ‘agency’.” she described.

You thought as much. If the hushed whispers and dirty looks weren’t a big enough hint, then the gentle hum of your spider sense was an immediate giveaway. There were some among them that contemplated violence against you, but knew that they wouldn’t be able to get away with it.

Almost unanimously, all of you decided to follow Gordy’s trail. And as time went by, it became significantly easier to follow, even for an amateur like you. Disturbed foliage and dirt quickly evolved into demolished trees and deep craters in the ground.

At first, you were deathly afraid for the kid, but the more you examined the trial of carnage, the more you began to feel like he could handle himself just fine in most situations.

In fact, you were pretty sure that the raccoon kid might’ve been under-selling Gordy’s ability. What he described as “wind blasts” seemed more like projectile hurricane winds to you.

This started to seem more plausible when you came across your first corpse. Unsurprisingly, it was a pirate’s body.

His clothing was raggedy, and his head was clean shaven underneath a red bandana. He had a thick, bushy handlebar mustache above his lip, and an eyepatch over one eye. His remaining eye was open, glazed over and milky in its color. He seemed to be staring off into some distant horizon that you just couldn’t see.

Callisto stood back as Anastasia checked the body, knowing that this fell into her area of expertise. Peter didn’t seem to care much, one way or another. He simply floated around in a circle, glancing around impatiently and tapping his arm with a finger.

“His skull has been fractured, his neck was broken, and I believe his spine might be shattered in multiple places.” she reported. “He could have died from any of these, really. But I do not think he has been dead long.”

“You sure? He’s smelling a little ripe.” Prowler said.

Peter snickered at that. “That’s just how pirates always smell. Despite being around all that water, they probably only bathe around once every few months.”

“Is the kid really strong enough to do that?” Cat asked him, glancing at the body.

Peter made a speculative expression for a moment, before nodding. “I’ve seen him do worse. He once threw a gust of wind that tore the flesh clean off a wolf. Truth be told, I think he was more scared and surprised than the wolf was.”

Cat seemed to cringe at that. Glass just frowned.

“These kids need proper training. Young mutants are prone to hurting themselves and others when they don’t have a handle on their powers.” Glass said.

“I thought you hated it at Xavier’s.” Callisto said.

“I did. But I know that some of the stuff they were doing was necessary to give those kids some agency in their lives. It’s not fun being at the mercy of your own powers.” he replied, giving Callisto a look that you couldn’t quite decipher.

She stiffened for a moment, and then looked away, gazing out at the sea.

Damn. Xavier’s is more hardcore than you thought. You’d kill to have something that valuable to train your own people.

“I can guarantee that he could probably lay a good number of your guys out in a straight up brawl.” Callisto goaded you.

You severely doubted that this kid could take on Flint in his current incarnation, but Felicia and Prowler were anyone’s guess. You’d have to see for yourself when you met up with them. It wasn’t a bad offer at all. You could use the extra muscle in the days to come.

“Sounds promising. I’ll swing by sometime later tomorrow to see what he’s all about.” you promised, glancing over at the others, who were now deeply engaged in another conversation that you weren’t close enough to hear clearly. “What’re his powers?”

Callisto made a brief, motorboat-like noise with her mouth before answering. “Well, we call him ‘Glass’ because most of his body is made of this clear, crystalline stuff. He can harden his body, fire out shards of glass, and make weapons and shit.” she explained.

“Is he fragile like glass?” you asked.

“He might get a few cracks every now and again, but I’ve never seen him get completely shattered. His body’s tough enough to stop bullets, and he can heal whatever sort of damage he takes.”

That did sound impressive! Maybe you lucked out by forging bonds with the crazy sewer lady.

“We’ll see if he lives up to the hype. Where should we meet up?”

“Your choice. I’m the one that knows this place like the back of my hand.”

You pulled out your map and marked a location that would easily allow you to reach the phone booth that Dr. Connors wrecked earlier. Confirming this with her, she agreed to meet you there and hung up shortly afterward. You had more than a few things to discuss with her, but you would have that opportunity when she introduced you to ‘Glass’ tomorrow.

Once that was over, you rejoined the group and casually shrugged off their questions and concerns. All you said was that you would be scouting for a new recruit tomorrow. You would have to figure out whether you were going to be taking anyone other than Cindy with you.

But before then, you had some business to take care of.

“I hereby request that we hold a vote over the initiation of Flint Marko, ‘The Sandman’, into the Desperados.” you announced. “Me and Cindy Moon can vouch for his trustworthiness and loyalty to the cause of making loads of money. All in favor?”

“You know, if you’re really bent out of shape about it,” you began. “You could always work for me. Think of it as non-permanent, contracted work.” you suggested.

To your surprise, the sewer dweller didn’t shut you down immediately. In fact, she appeared to be openly considering your proposal. “I’ve got a lot of responsibilities down here, what with the orphans and lost ones passing through every now and again. But…I suppose that I can delegate those responsibilities to the others once they’re all healed up.” she said, thinking aloud.

At some point, Callisto appeared to come to a decision, because she nodded to you. “I’ll work for you if you’re straightforward and honest with me going forward. I’ll talk to the others about taking on more responsibilities so I can free up my schedule.” she said before letting a wry grin tease her lips. “Maybe I’ll even let you meet them one day. I’m sure they’d like to thank their generous benefactor in person one day.”

You tilted your head in confusion, but then you remembered that you gave her like 10k when you first met. You were glad to hear that your money has been getting put to good use. If this mutual partnership worked out, then you might consider renovating these sewers to fit your needs, and the Morlocks’ accommodations. There were countless possibilities and advantages to having access to a maze of underground tunnels. But…you’d have to discuss that later.

As the two of you conversed and negotiated, you couldn’t help but be drawn to Cindy as she continued to stare at you. “What are you gonna do about the kid? You planning to let her stay down here with you?” you asked, pointing at Cindy.

Callisto seemed pensive when she glanced at the mute ninja. “She can stay if she wants. The Morlocks accept outcasts and runaways of all kinds these days. But for someone as young as her, I’d recommend the F.E.A.S.T. Center. The people there are real nice.” she admitted.

“Well, aren’t you a regular philanthropist!” you teased. Callisto rolled her eyes, and to your absolute shock, the woman actually seemed to blush a little at that!

“Oh, shut it. I’m just doing my part. Everyone needs someone looking out for them, you know?” you nodded your agreement and returned your attention to Cindy. What will you do with her?
