Your head is already starting to throb with agony. Why did you stay around, why did you stay around, why did you-
Okay. You can make it through this, Vincent.
Elizabeth. Elizabeth. That name sounds familiar. Didn't the <span class="mu-b">MAN</span> warn you about an Elizabeth? Best to watch what you say then.
You start to dig into the slop this facility has graciously provided for it. It tastes somehow worse this time. It sticks to the roof of your mouth like glue. Eugh.
"So, wait, hold on." You tap your spoon against a rock hard clump of 'rice'. "Liz. You're here. Willingly."
"Mmh hmm! I got hired a few weeks ago."
"Why."
"Why what? You already know how I got the job, silly."
Your headache gets worse. "No, why are you even here? I've been here for a grand total of TWO DAYS and I already feel like death itself."
"Oh!" She rhythmically taps her spoon on the table. "Well, it's a government job. Even with the budget cuts," She shudders after mentioning them. Seems like a sore spot for her. "I don't think anyone got fired? Job security's pretty nice."
"To be honest? The main reason is because of the anomalies. Weird monsters, mystical artifacts, phenomena you can't understand..." Her golden eyes glimmer with excitement. "I'm a sucker for it, really! It's a shame I can't tell anyone outside the facility about it though!"
"So you work at a dum-" You clear your throat. "At an...underfunded place like this? Just for the anomalies?"
"Mmh hmm. I'll admit this place has seen better days but I couldn't pass on the opportunity."
"Right. Guess that makes sense." You dryly respond. "Uh. The people who work here are really, really weird."
"I know, right?" Liz rolls her eyes. "It's like every other person is a freak."
"Right?!" You throw your hands in the air. "I just had a gun pointed at me not even ten minutes ago!"
"I-I saw. S-sorry t-that happened." Lucy gurgles sympathetically.
"Woo, yeah, don't mess with Colt." Liz whispers as if she's worried he could hear her. "Ever since <span class="mu-b">Red Blooded American</span> got shipped to his lab, he's never been quite the same."
"If it wasn't for him being a prime employee, I would've told HR to deal with him already." Nicole grumbles under her breath.
"Yeah. Got any advice on how I can talk to the weirdos here?"
Liz hums a little ditty as she ponders the question. "Well, a lot are in the same boat as you. Aside from me and Nicky over here-"
"Do not call me that."
"-a lot of them got 'promoted' here from all over the country."
"People here really only care about two things. Your skills and your resources. If they don't see you as someone valuable, they're going to boss you around like Colt did."
"To put it in terms you understand," Nicole's smile widens even further. It almost reminds you of the turtleneck man's smile. "<span class="mu-b">you have to get on that 'grindset'.</span>"
oh god. hustle culture never dies huh.
"Is there any way to, uh, get them to like me?"
