>>5835680Run a series of oneshots with ideas tangentially related to the main quest you're planning and/or in a similar format (e.g. a section of an adventure with friends to retrieve something or a civ or a mechanics-heavy fighting quest). Make notes for your main quest in parallel with running them. This combo will allow you to grow your creative muscles while generating material from which you can mould your main quest's narrative. Run your quest in 3-6 months with the obtained experience.
Or JUST DO IT and improve as you go. So long as the ride is wild, there will be players. (also the entire detailed advice part is me just bullshitting trying to come up with a way to pack the entirety of a QM's experience into a short time period lol. I haven't done it, gone the long and hard way of running multiple quests over the years)
