Glass shook his head.

“I have…no idea what you’re talking about. But I’m probably not supposed to. Callisto did say that you liked to ‘talk nonsense’.”

“It’s the only other language that I’m fluent in. According to my brother, though, that actually isn’t a great thing to slap on your resume.”

Glass shrugged his shoulders at you.

“I wouldn’t know. I’ve never had to make one before.”

“Some people have all the luck…” you said with a sigh.

That earned you a chuckle from the crystalline Morlock.

“Alright. I’m done with my interrogation.” Callisto announced, tossing your cell phone back at you as she rejoined the group. You caught it easily.

“How’d it go?” Glass inquired.

“Great, actually. We have a lot in common, and she wants to meet for brunch and pedicures tomorrow.”

Surprise flashed across Glass’ face.

“Really?”

“At the same time?” you asked, at the same time Glass asked his question.

Callisto rolled her eye.

“No.” she replied, swatting her gullible friend in the stomach with the back of her hand. If Glass felt that at all, or was discomforted by it in any way, he didn’t show it.

Callisto turned to you next.

“And no, but…that wouldn’t be a bad idea. Maybe we should include that in the list of park renovations.” she suggested.

“I’ll put it at the top of my list.” you promised. “Right after I convince Ember to create a pen and paper so that I can write down everything that I remember.”

“So it’s not gonna be a very long list, then.” Callisto concluded.

“Are you ever gonna to tell us how your interview actually went?” Glass prompted.

“It went alright, I think. She says that she wants to meet me in person so that she can verify a couple things.”

“Sounds like someone skipped over the second interview.” you said, giving Glass a meaningful look.

“All that means is that she wants to get to know me a little better.” Glass protested.

“Well excuse me for having a shitty personality.” Callisto said, sounding mildly offended.

You were about to say “You’re excused”, when the three of you noticed a commotion happening in the direction that Ember and Screwball had gone in.

“What’s going on over there?” Callisto asked.

“I don’t know, but I should check it out.” Glass decided. “Stay here in case Iara shows up for the interview.”

And before either of you could say anything, he jogged off to investigate the situation.

“Undoubtedly.” she replied, placing a flower back into the box and picking up another.

While she played with them, you went on to explain the rest of the rules, making absolutely certain that your shared knowledge matched up perfectly. It wouldn’t do for someone to get spirited away to the land of the Fae, after all.

You also explained your idea of sowing garlic and dogwood along with the fairy flowers in order to drive off any visitors that might think of showing up.

Callisto scrunched up her nose and complained that the greenhouse would “fucking reek like nobody’s business”, clearly forgetting that she spent all her time in a sewer. The only reason you weren’t complaining about the smell was because the gas filters in your mask were sparing you the pain of having to hold your breath or breathe through your mouth.

What will you say to convince Callisto?

Glass’ eyes flicked back to Flint, and he gave an approving nod as he sized the big man up once more. “Fine with me. Are we just boxing, or are we allowed to use powers too?” he said, slipping his shoes off to reveal skeletal feet encased in crystal.

“Try your best to tear him apart.” you said, narrowing your eyes at him and flashing him a fierce grin that he couldn’t see.

Glass smirked, turned around and waved for Flint to follow him. “Alright. Let’s see what you’ve got.”

Moments later, Glass and Flint were in some sort of pit that had once been part of a massive drainage pipe. The atmosphere of the Morlocks’ home had now shifted dramatically. Instead of cowering in fear, they were now cheering for the spectacle that they were about to witness. Almost all of the cheers were for Glass, of course. He appeared to be quite popular here.

You and Callisto were standing side by side in the front of the crowd that had gathered. There appeared to be more people here than when you’d arrived. Either that, or you simply hadn’t noticed them earlier.

What will you talk about while you observe the fight?

>”How’ve you been since that whole ‘Lizard’ thing?”
>”I noticed a few humans mixed in with the mutants here. Do they get along?”
>”You said that you were a better fighter than Glass, right? You think you can take him?”

“Haven’t had fresh topsider food in a while. Might be nice.” she said, before turning her one good eye on you. “What kind of toppings?”

“Dealer’s choice?”

She nodded and returned to gazing off into the distance. “Meat lover’s. Extra cheese. Marinara dipping sauce.” she said, almost as if in a trance.

“Not a ranch kind of girl?”

“God, no! We’ve got way too much of that down here already. You’d be surprised by how many people end up throwing out whole entire bottles of salad dressing.” she laughed, not noticing that she said “we” once again.

You both shared a muffled laugh, and fell silent for a while. It was only then that you realized she never asked you why you were being chased by Vultures. She looked at you, and seemed to pick up on what you were thinking. And with her eyes and body language, she told you plain and simple: “I don’t wanna know.”

“I never caught your name.”

The smile dropped from her face a little, and she seemed to consider something before answering.

“Callisto.” she said, not offering anything more than that.

You nodded and turned away slowly, silently amending the “sewer lady” title that you’d given her up until now. You briefly considered calling your friends to let them know that you were all right, but you were also worried that someone might be able to track you down through the use of your phone.

You pulled out the burner and stared at it for a while, weighing the risks involved.

“Reception isn’t too good down here. We have a couple of landlines down here that you could use, though. Those are harder to tap.” Callisto said, glancing at your phone.

That was a decent suggestion, and a surprisingly considerate one, but you’d probably do better to stay put and wait for the Vulture’s to lose interest in you.

You needed to lie low for a while, or at least find a new place to stay now that your hideout got blown to smithereens.

Where will you go?
